International Petroleum Taxation and Finance

The course is aimed at petroleum industry professionals, both in government and industry, who wish to gain a grounding in the fiscal and financial dimensions of the international petroleum industry within a legal framework; the programme combines legal, policy and quantitative studies.

Entry requirements

LLM: A good 4 year degree, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, preferably at 2.1 Honours degree level or above; equivalent of a 2.2 Honours degree may also apply; preferred degree disciplines; law; economics; geology; petroleum or mining engineering; finance; work experience in the energy/natural resources industry is an advantage; though not strictly a requirement for admission to the LLM; English language proficiency requirements are; IELTS 6.5, or TOEFL 603 or 250 on the computer-based test.

Course modules

Natural resources sectors (a multidisciplinary introduction); dissertation or internship; international petroleum law and policy; mineral and petroleum taxation; risk analysis for energy and mining investment decision making; financial and project analysis of natural resources and energy ventures; legal framework for international project finance; mineral resources policy and economics; petroleum policy and economics.

Assessment methods

Dissertation; internship report; PhD proposal.
