Advanced Mechanical Engineering

This course combines advanced taught modules with research experience; covering areas such as experimental stress analysis; tribology of machine elements; mechanical engineering of railways.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 in mechanical engineering or a related subject. Applicants with qualifications in other science/engineering subjects such as maths or physics, or relevant professional experience, are encouraged to apply. English language requirements: IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: information management for researchers; research project; advanced experiments and modelling. Optional modules: reciprocating engines; aerodynamic design; experimental stress analysis; tribology of machine elements; mechanical engineering of railways; nuclear thermal hydraulics and heat transfer; structural vibration, analysis and practice; advanced finite element modelling; engineering composite materials; signal processing and instrumentation.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed by exams, coursework assignments and a dissertation.
