Educational Studies: Learning, Teaching and Research (Malta)

The MA in Educational Studies: Learning, Teaching and Research is well established in the UK and is designed for teachers, those responsible for curriculum change, and other professionals working in State and Independent schools across the age range. Students from around the world have successfully completed our distance learning courses which enable busy working professionals to use their work as a basis for their own further learning and professional development. The course is now offered in Malta, building on the success of students following other courses offered by the University of Sheffield in Malta. It gives students opportunity to reflect on their practice, on current policy, and address theory and research relevant to their pedagogical interests.

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the contexts and processes of learning, teaching and educational research in order to equip them with the skills, aptitudes and critical reflexivity required for further academic research and pedagogical practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have sufficient English language to successfully complete their course. For entry to our distance learning courses, applicants who have successfully completed a degree at a university where English was the language of study, such as the University of Malta, and provide sufficient evidence of this, will not normally be required to complete a separate English Language qualification.

If you have not done so the standard English language requirement for the Masters programme is as below:
Masters Programme – an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component, or the equivalent in an alternative qualification.

Course modules

The course has four modules, with unique, specially prepared units:

  • Module 1: Foundation Module: Learning, Teaching and Curriculum
  • Module 2: Evolving Understandings in Teachings and Learning
  • Module 3: Developing Pedagogies: E-Pedagogies and Managing Change
  • Module 4: Educational Research in International Contexts
  • These are followed by the dissertation, which is the focus of the fifth study school.

Assessment methods

Each module will normally be assessed through a 30-credit assignment. Students will be able to negotiate with their personal tutor assignment themes most suited to their circumstances and interests. Students work with their academic tutors at weekend schools, by telephone, skype and online.


The dissertation is an opportunity to focus on an issue of personal/professional interest to the student. The dissertation represents one third of the MA (60 credits out of 180, approximately 15,000 - 20,000 words).
