The University of Sheffield
Languages, Education and Research (Malta)
The MA in Languages, Education and Research aims to explore the position of languages and languages learning from a broad educational perspective, ranging from the nature of languages curricula in schools to issues of multilingualism and plurilingualism in educational contexts, whilst also offering a module focused on pedagogical aspects. Students will consider generic and languages specific aspects of educational policy and research, whilst also reflecting on the role of all teachers in the linguistic development of their students and the language needs of Malta. The broad focus on the elements of language, education and society provides flexibility in terms of student engagement with the programme and ensures that students can specialise in areas of particular interest to them through the assignment topics. The course director has research specialisms in both socio- and psycholinguistics (multilingualism and plurilingualism) as well as languages pedagogies, and is experienced in supervising students from around the world.
Applicants must have sufficient English language to successfully complete their course. For entry to our distance learning courses, applicants who have successfully completed a degree at a university where English was the language of study, such as the University of Malta, and provide sufficient evidence of this, will not normally be required to complete a separate English Language qualification.
If you have not done so the standard English language requirement for the Masters programme is as below:
Masters Programme – an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component, or the equivalent in an alternative qualification.
- Module 1: Foundation Module: Learning, Teaching and Curriculum
- Module 2: Language Acquisition, Learning and Pedagogy
- Module 3: Language, Society and Education
- Module 4: Educational Research in International Contexts
Each module will normally be assessed through a 30-credit assignment. The dissertation is a 15,000-20,000 word report of original research carried out by the student. Students will be able to negotiate with their personal tutor assignment themes most suited to their circumstances and interests. Students are taught by members of the academic team during study schools and maintain contact with their tutors by e-mail and skype.
