The course provides a number of optional routes which lead to IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science) accredited awards for those currently in, or planning a career in, the Medical Laboratory profession. The route options are: cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, medical microbiology and a generic route. The course offers the opportunity to address the developing areas of biomedical science common to all associated disciplines, including recent advances in genetics and immunology, and to equip students with the research skills necessary to complement their clinical laboratory responsibilities. Part-time students study core (and most optional) modules on 1 full day of the week, minimising the time away from work.
Modules include: clinical immunology; gene technology; laboratory medicine. Specialist module (from cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology or medical microbiology): management in biomedical science; research methods in biomedical science; biomedical science research project.

Many part-time students are funded by their employers; other part-time and full-time students self fund or use Career Development Loans.
