As a Royal Air Force Weapon Technician, you will be responsible for arming our aircraft with weapons. You will also make sure all the weapons management and release systems are in full working order. Most weapons technicians spend their first tour of duty on a flying squadron helping with ground handling tasks and preparing the aircraft for the next flight, you could go on to work with ejection seats and rocket launchers, bombs and missiles or to service small arms and automatic weapons.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Arm aircraft with bombs, guided weapons, missiles and loading aircraft guns.
  • Maintain and repair ejection seats, aircraft gun systems and missile launchers.
  • Service and issue rifles, pistols, machine guns and heavier weapons.

Salary:

  • Pay during first 6 months - £18,600 + benefits
  • Pay until completion of Technical training - £23,400 + benefits
  • Pay on completion of Technical training - £27,200 + benefits

Qualifications you need;

  • A minimum of GCSE Grade C (Grade 4 with effect from Aug 17) or equivalent in English language, Mathematics and an approved Science/Technology-based subject.

Joining age;

  • 16-47

Other entry requirements;

  • You must be a citizen of the UK, Republic of Ireland, a Commonwealth citizen since birth (with a ‘right to work’ immigration status) or holder of duel UK/ other nationality.
  • Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have resided there for the 5 years immediately preceding your application. However, candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered.

Apprenticeship/Training;

During your specialist training you will be enrolled, if eligible, on a Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, the Technical Certificate element of which is a Level 3 Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance (Military) and delivered entirely in training. You will be required to complete the portfolio element of the Level 3 Diploma in Aviation Maintenance competence qualification during your first tour when you leave specialist training and conduct an End Point Assessment to be awarded your Apprenticeship.

The course is designed to give you a basic understanding of your role as an armament specialist and includes awareness of explosive safety requirements and the maintenance and repair skills of aircraft weapons systems, weapon launching systems and aircraft escape systems.
