Formal Training

2019

"As new-starters, we had many induction talks on research and resources, conduct, meeting behaviours, introductions to departments and so on. The programme so far has been about getting us settled and comfortable within the firm, knowing where to go for help and being reassured that everyone including the partners are there to help us and encourage us to ask questions. Non-legal skills I've picked up include phone etiquette, delegation, prioritisation and general office demeanour (something a lot of firms overlook). Legal skills I'm picking up are letter writing, emails to clients, memos, new points and areas of law."

"There's a fairly broad range of seats and you get a lot of responsibility, so you can learn how to effectively manage your time and caseload. It would be nice to have more opportunities to work with certain departments, such as IP and white collar, which don't seem to use trainees very much."
First year trainee, London
"We have a specific litigation programme and specific corporate programme along with a tailored trainee training programme."
Second year trainee, London
"The training programme is alright, but could be more focused on the departments you are currently working in to avoid telling you things you already know or won't need to know for several months."

"Cooley uni is a good way to learn what you need to and warm up for your day-to-day job."

"Training is constant. We are encouraged to take part in external training sessions as well as internal ones. The firm is keen to hear what we would like training on and implements suggestions."

"The lunchtime internal training programme for trainees wasn’t running when I started, but has recently re-launched after a period of transition in becoming Cooley."
Second year trainee, London
"The lunchtime training programme was patchy immediately after the firm launched but it looks like it is getting back on track now."

"The firm puts on a good amount of lunchtime legal seminars for trainees, and also specific training on non-legal skills such as presentation skills."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm is part of a wider group of law firms who put on educational seminars for each other in specialist areas which are always very interesting. There is an in-house training programme for trainees during the first year, over and above the PSC which is great for picking up practical advice, such as how to write an effective research memo."
First year trainee, London
"There are a range of internal seminars throughout the training contract; on topics such as presentation skills and advocacy training. Trainees are encouraged to attend external seminars."
Second year trainee, London
"We attend numerous internal lunch time seminars with associates and partners and are encouraged to attend external seminars as part of the Inn Group."
