Trainee Retention

9.1 / 10

(based on 18 ratings in 2019)

"I have already received an offer of a new qualifier position at the firm though the role was contested so I was not sure whether I would be kept or not at the time. That being said, if I hadn't been offered a role in my chosen department, I am confident that I could have been kept on in a different department had I wanted to. Most of the trainees tend to want to stay at the firm and I have found that those who leave generally do so because there is not a role available for them in their chosen department due to several trainees wanting to qualify into the same department."

"Retention rates are very good. Any gaps are often caused by too many people applying for the same job."
First year trainee, London
"I have been fortunate to secure a new qualifier position at the firm but I am aware that not everyone has been as successful."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"The retention rates at the firm are over 80%. Having said this, the Manchester office has had a rate of 100% over the last two years, so I am very confident to be kept on as a new qualifier."
First year trainee, Manchester
"They're good, especially in the regional offices. I was impressed at how flexible they were in order to make sure they kept people on. I felt like we were really valued ."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Our retention rates are excellent and Pinsents is always keen to keep trainees on as new qualifiers."

"The retention rates are very good, but it all depends on what the business need is next year in the particular areas that you might want to qualify in. One thing I have noticed is that there are a number of people here who did not get kept on as a new qualifier because there was no post available for them in that particular year. However, when a post did later become available, they were invited to come back and apply again so joined the firm that way."
First year trainee, Manchester
"The retention rates at PM tend to be quite good and there is flexibility about where you qualify into (ie you can go to another office)."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"Almost everyone who wants to stay is given the opportunity to do so. The only issues arise when there is a disproportionate number of people wanting to qualify into the same department, although provision has been made to accommodate this at times."
First year trainee, London
"The retention rates tend to be pretty good, although there is a robust new qualifier application process and it is clearly not just a tick-box exercise. The process is very transparent, however, which is appreciated."
Second year trainee, London
"The retention rates at the firm are very good and all of the Manchester trainees from the year above mine have been taken on. As with every firm, it is not guaranteed that you will be kept on at qualification but this is because people may apply for the same jobs rather than there not being enough jobs."
First year trainee, Manchester

"The firm has had the odd bad year but this has been down to too many trainees going for jobs in the same department when there are vacancies in other teams that are under-subscribed. The firm has taken on fewer trainees in the last year or so, which should be a positive in terms of retention rates."
First year trainee, London
"The retention rates at my firm are good, particularly in Scotland, and this has been evidenced in the most recent round of new qualifiers."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"The retention rates are good at the firm but the available new qualifier positions are often heavily oversubscribed."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"Retention rates are strong at Pinsent Masons. Uncertainty tends to derive more from whether there will be a new qualifier role in your preferred department or how much competition there will be for the particular job you want."
First year trainee, Leeds
"The retention rates at the Leeds office were very good this year (8/10)."
First year trainee, Leeds
"They are typically okay. The year above me had it tough as there were so many of them. My year is smaller, which will hopefully take the pressure off as if I want to qualify at the firm."
First year trainee, London
"I think the retention rates are very good. My impression is that if you want a job, you will be able to get one. The only question is whether there will be the job you want in the location you want."
