About Vinny Potter

Vinny is an experienced careers professional, having worked in University Careers roles since 2009. He is currently working as the careers team leader at St Mary's University, part of the Careers Group, University of London.

He has previously worked as a senior careers consultant in a number of different member institutions, including the Institute of Education, the Royal Veterinary College, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, QAHE, and Queen Mary, University of London.

He has a particular interest in education, teaching and youth work. In his current role he is responsible for the careers provision for all the teacher training students in the university including their three-year primary with QTS course, PGCE primary and secondary courses, work-based route courses and Schools Direct.

He is a member of the AGCAS Teaching and Related Professions Task Group . He is a governor at Merstham Park Secondary School where he is the careers link for the governing body. He has been a cub scout leader for more than five years and is a charity trustee for his local scout group.

His previous employment included four years as an occupational therapist in the NHS. This was followed by work in: a hospice in Rawalpindi, Pakistan; as a disaster relief worker in Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake; as advance visits officer for HRH the Prince of Wales’ visit to Northern Pakistan; as an English teacher for the British Council in Cameroon; as a teacher in an orphanage in Yaoundé; and as an emergency planning officer at the British High Commission in Yaoundé.

He has a degree in occupational therapy and a qualification in careers education, information and guidance in higher education from Warwick University.
