Law pupillages 2026

FAQs:

A pupillage is the final stage of training to become a barrister. It’s a year-long, work-based apprenticeship in chambers where you learn how to practise at the Bar. Completing a pupillage is essential if you want to qualify and build a career as a barrister.

Most pupillages are advertised through the Pupillage Gateway, with applications typically opening in January and closing in February for roles starting the following year. Some chambers recruit outside the Gateway, so it’s wise to research early and track deadlines carefully.

Pupillages are highly competitive, often with hundreds of applicants for a small number of places. Strong academic results, advocacy experience, and clear motivation for your chosen practice area are essential. Persistence is normal—many successful barristers apply more than once.

While many candidates have strong academic records from traditional law pathways, chambers increasingly value diverse experiences. Mooting, debating, mini-pupillages, legal work experience, and evidence of resilience and judgment all matter. There’s no single “perfect” profile.

Usually, yes. Most pupillages are awarded with a view to tenancy, meaning a permanent position in chambers. While tenancy isn’t guaranteed, pupillage gives you the training, visibility, and professional credibility needed to secure long-term practice at the Bar.
