Satisfaction with Work

8.3 / 10

(based on 8 ratings in 2019)

2019

"I'm often assigned work that I would not experience at a City firm with a larger intake of trainees. Smaller intakes mean you are a key member of a deal team from day one. You are trusted and you learn on the job."
Second year trainee, London
"The work is generally of very high quality. We are rarely expected to do menial tasks or general admin. The size of the teams means you're exposed to high-level work at a very early stage."
Second year trainee, London
"I am satisfied with the quality of work assigned. As the most junior person on a deal, you will inevitably be given some administrative tasks, but your day-to-day role differs every day. A typical day could consist of taking a first cut of a complex intercreditor agreement, reviewing risk factors in a prospectus or managing a due diligence process on your own."
Second year trainee, London
"I'm extremely satisfied with the quality and variety of work and the level of responsibility we are entrusted with from an early stage."
Second year trainee, London.
"The quality of the work is high. Though we are asked to do 'typical trainee tasks', such as running comparisons or sending meeting invites, we are also expected to do meaningful work. I have had a surprising amount of drafting experience, I have led calls with the client and I have taken on entire workstreams with supervision. Trainees are given a lot of responsibility at Cleary Gottlieb."
Second year trainee, London
"The quality of the work is excellent. I rarely complete the same research or drafting tasks twice and frequently work on high-profile, headline-grabbing matters."

"It changes by seat. At present, I am performing a sweeping role on a huge merger review, which is interesting but can be a little broad. My previous seat was in finance and there was inconsistency in the type of work. That said, some of it was the most stimulating work I have ever done, professionally or academically."
First year trainee, London, UK
"I'm very satisfied. I occasional work on admin tasks and have done a lot of project management."
Second year trainee, London
"My work varies but it's usually of a very good quality and people give you the freedom to run parts of a deal yourself as a trainee. Teams are small and usually only consist of a partner, an associate and a trainee so you get lots of responsibility, even as a junior."
Second year trainee, London
"I assist with reviewing and drafting documents as well as corresponding with clients, co-counsel and opposing counsel."
Second year trainee, London
"Trainees are given a lot of responsibility and encouraged to take initiative."

"I'm very satisfied with the work. I've been able to personally negotiate clauses in security documents and been allowed to free-draft some documents. I've been given work from a range of practice groups."
Second year trainee, London
"I am often given research questions into specific areas, as well as being put in charge of organising the administrative aspects of a case. For example, I've been put in charge of updating the bundles and booking the court room"
Second year trainee, London
"I was given a lot of responsibility early on."
First year trainee, London
"You're given a lot of responsibility as a trainee at Cleary Gottlieb and you will find yourself liaising directly with the clients. You also have a support network in place to make sure you know exactly who to turn to when certain questions arise. The opportunity to work closely with partners is also a big bonus. As a trainee, you may get assigned research tasks or asked to help draft client memorandum, which is a good way of keeping up to date with all new legal developments."
Second year trainee, Buenos Aires

"I have had a lot of client interaction in my first seat. My day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on the nature of our work."
First year trainee, London
"I have a high level of client contact, and generally a lot of responsibility in my role."
Second year trainee, London
"I have lots of client interaction, and on a day-to-day basis I'm responsible for drafting key documents and updating the team on any changes to the transaction."
Second year trainee, London
"I'm incredibly new, but so far the work I have been given has been genuinely substantive. It has mostly been research based in terms of summarising areas of law for a client or looking into a particular problem, but it has been genuinely interesting."
First year trainee, London

"As a trainee, I found that you are able to quickly assume the role of a junior associate."
Second year trainee, London
"I have experienced a lot of client interaction, and been given plenty of responsibility from the start, and this involves liaising closely with paralegals to work together."
Second year trainee, London
"I have a lot of client interaction where appropriate, and I feel that I am always included on calls and meetings with the client. At the firm you are able to take on as much responsibility as you can handle which is amazing, and it allows you to grow and develop at your own pace."
Second year trainee, Hong Kong
"In my first month I was emailing clients, counsel and other firms. On a day-to-day basis I compare versions of documents, input comments as well as attempting to draft clauses and suggest amendments to documents."
First year trainee, London
"I am a first seat trainee sitting with a senior associate. During my first week I emailed clients and communicated with law firms representing counterparties; I have also reviewed and amended documents."
First year trainee, London
"During my second week of my first seat, I met a major client whilst working on an M7A transaction whilst on a high level negotiation meeting in Amsterdam. Since then, I have met another major client of the firm in connection with a different matter. Cleary encourages trainees to take on responsibility early on, and lets them meet and work with clients as soon as an opportunity arises."
First year trainee, London
"I find that work here tends to be more interesting than at other firms - trainees have more flexibility to choose work that we find interesting, and we get a lot of client interaction at an early stage."
Second year trainee, London
"Trainees have a lot of client contact, and contact with international offices. We are given a lot of responsibility whilst still having an excellent support network."
First year trainee, London
"I feel as though I have much more client interaction than my peers in other firms. The responsibility we are given is great; should you feel able; you are certainly given the opportunity to take control of parts of deals/projects even as a trainee."
Second year trainee, London

2013

"Great work balance. For a first seat trainee obviously I have had trainee tasks like managing data room indexes and a lot of due diligence but in my first week I was marking up a license, and I have joined a lot of very interesting meetings involving negotiations of transaction documents. Certainly every day I am doing something different."
First year trainee, London
"High level of client interaction generally with top quality work. Occasionally pressured but very rewarding."
First year trainee, London
"It's very good. There is no clerical work to do: if it can be done by a secretary, it will be. Trainees are given a (stressfully) high degree of responsibility and client exposure."
First year trainee, London
"Generally interesting and relevant, supervisor makes an effort to make sure work is varied."
First year trainee, London
"The work can range from traditional 'trainee tasks' such as bibling and bundling to drafting and negotiating documents single-handedly. Helpfully, I have always found the associates approachable when help is required."
Second year trainee, London
