Interview Questions

2019

"I was mostly asked to elaborate on experiences I'd talked about in my application and what I'd learned from them. I was also asked why I wanted to be a lawyer, what my strengths and weaknesses were and what I would do if it became apparent that I couldn't make a deadline."
First year trainee, London
"The questions focused on my personality and competency as well as my work interests and experiences."
Second year trainee, London
"My interviews consisted primarily of competency questions and follow-ups on my application form."

"I was asked about a lot of stuff I had written in my application so it was personal to me. For example, I did a lot of charity work when I was at school and through university, so one of the partners dug into this a little bit more. I was also asked about what practice areas of law interested me the most and why. I was asked about times when I'd dealt with conflict and when I've had to correct someone in a more senior position to me. I was also asked about my work experience and what I do in my spare time."

2016

"What caused the global financial crisis? Tell us about you. Scenario based questions."
First year trainee, London
"The usual questions: why law? Why this firm? I was asked about recent events as well."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked about current events. I had a question about a situation where I had failed and what I had learned from it. There were personal questions about my academic path."
First year trainee, London
"How many cars are there in the UK?"
Second year trainee, London
"Various situational judgement questions and a few questions about why I wanted to do law and whether I felt that I had sufficient experience in large firms to make my mind up (I had not done a vacation scheme)."
Second year trainee, London
"Tell us about a significant challenge you faced and how you overcame it. Tell us about a time you failed and what you learned from it. Why do you want to be a trainee at Cooley? How would you explain a lease to a five year old?"
Second year trainee, London

2015

"I was asked questions along the lines of: tell us about yourself; why did you choose Cooley; some commercial awareness questions, such as what I thought about the recession and when it would end, in addition to some situational judgement questions. I think you should expect to answer a question on a current issue. I was also asked to expand on answers I provided in my application, including my previous legal experience and how I have handled challenging situations. The interviewees tend to stick to a set list of questions, which makes the process fair and really allows the good candidates to stand out."
Second year trainee, London
"In my interview I was asked questions on why I wanted to pursue a career in law and to describe a lease as if I was explaining it to a five year old. I was also asked questions on current issues, such as what I thought the lasting impact of the London 2012 Olympic Games would be for the city, and why."
First year trainee, London
"Interview questions were along the lines of: expanding answers I provided in the application form; why I chose Cooley; challenges facing the legal industry; a discussion of previous legal work experience and how those experiences shaped the decision to apply to Cooley; some situational judgement questions. You should also expect a current awareness question: I was asked one on the recession, so I feel that you should expect to know about elections and the Eurozone, among other issues."
Second year trainee, London
"During my interview I was asked to describe the implications of the Eurozone crisis."
Second year trainee, London
