Satisfaction with Work

8.4 / 10

(based on 7 ratings in 2019)

2019

"The quality of work is really varied. Sometimes I'm given more admin-type things but I can also get a lot of responsibility and I have the freedom to approach the people on a project that I'm interested in to see if I can get involved."

"Trainees are given really high-quality work. I have had loads of direct client contact and been treated as part of the team from the beginning, almost without exception. The work is challenging, particularly when you are dealing with new areas of law, but very stimulating and both academic and practical."

"I do research tasks and overview/amend documents. I work on matters and clients I never dreamed I would be involved with straight away."

"My supervisor (or another associate/partner if they are busy) will always find something for me to do. It may be basic but fundamental, such as proofing contracts or sitting in on calls/meetings with clients and note taking. At the moment, a lot of what they are trying to do is expose me to the type of tasks I will get, as well as clients and work style, so that they can slowly give me increasing responsibilities."

"You can be given high levels of responsibility if working in a small team. You also get the usual low-level work, such as document review and bundling though."
Second year trainee, London
"Having compared it to other firms' trainees, I believe I have more responsibilities and ownership than most. Of course, I participate in bundling, due diligence and documents review but I also draft pieces of statements of cases, memoranda of advice, emails to clients, and my opinion is valued. I believe that, in terms of the substance of our work, it is as good as it gets for trainees in the City."

"In general, most trainees get to work on reasonably high-level work alongside a partner or associate. It's a great experience from the outset, if a bit daunting at times."
Second year trainee, London
"Very satisfied. I do a lot of research but also do various relief applications to the stamp office, help with precedents and am starting to get involved with reviewing tax deeds."

"Trainees get a lot of responsibility at Cooley and are really relied upon. You cannot hide in a large team here. The focus is on training so we are very often given challenging stretch tasks."

"I think that trainees take a hands-on role at Cooley, and very much considered part of the team. Trainees are typically invited to client meetings and participate in client calls, and are given good quality work including drafting client advisories and court documents."
Second year trainee, London
"My first two seats have been very hands-on, and I have had a lot of responsibility. I have drafted corporate documentation for a variety of transactions and regularly advise on the drafting of commercial agreements. I attend and actively contribute to most client meetings and have participated in several client-facing negotiations. There is also quite a lot of legal research, and article writing on new or changing areas of law."
First year trainee, London
"I feel that trainees are really valued at Cooley. We are trusted to get on with meaningful work, such as drafting client advisories and witness statements. Trainees are regularly invited to meetings/calls with clients and often liaise directly with the client. Exact responsibilities depend on the seat but I have felt really valued as part of the team across all the departments I have sat in."
Second year trainee, London
"I have a lot of indirect exposure to clients in my role."
