Formal Training

8.7 / 10

(based on 19 ratings in 2019)

"The firm runs training for trainees at the start of each seat that gives you the basic skills for working in that department. There are regular departmental training sessions after that and some are quite useful."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"The training programme at Pinsent Masons is unrivalled. We are given comprehensive training in core professional skills such as drafting, negotiation and time management at the start of the training contract and we practice group-specific training in each seat as well."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"The majority of the training is on the job and I am very satisfied with this part of it. There are also numerous training sessions delivered either by internal or external trainers, which are free to attend and often provide a very good update on the law. In terms of non-legal skills, there have been a few sessions on how to do business globally and inter-cultural training, which were also very interesting and useful."
First year trainee, Manchester
"There's too much to list! From the week-long residential that kicks off the training contract and gets some key professional skills course elements out of the way, there is a really good investment in training. I've also found the teams I'm in are very good at giving me the opportunity to attend and observe for training only. For example, I got the chance to sit in on a judicial review hearing unrelated to the work I was assisting with."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"This is very extensive and ranges from drafting to IT skills and interview skills."
First year trainee, Belfast
"We have an enormous range of training resources at our disposal, including our own PM Academy, which delivers training on core skills such as negotiation and delegation. We engage in training sessions very frequently. The induction training for trainees is exceptional and really sets up trainees to succeed in their training contracts."
Second year trainee, Belfast

"We complete the usual professional skills course modules and receive training at the start of each seat. The training for each team can be quite variable. I've had one seat where I travelled to London and had two days of training as well as 20 training videos to watch within the first month. I've also had a seat where we were just pointed to the resources available should we need them. It would be better if there was a bit more consistency on that front. We also receive communications about other training opportunities, whether that's department-based or for broader legal skills."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"The training is very comprehensive and we hit our training hours within the first month of being at the firm. There were inductions at PM and a week away where a lot of soft skills were taught. When we rotate seats, each new seat comes with a training programme and there are regular training events throughout the year that we can participate in."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"The formal training varies between departments. It is very, very good in some but can be thin on the ground in others."
First year trainee, London
"We have regular training sessions. Most are specific to the department you're in but we also have general legal skills sessions every few months that are really useful. We also have inter-departmental training to help teams share their specific areas of knowledge."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"The professional skills course sessions are interesting. Most supervisors take their role very seriously and ensure you get a variety of work."
First year trainee, London
"There are plenty of training programmes and you can book to go on several different ones at various points of the year. I have picked up a variety of skills during my training contract that will help me as a qualified solicitor."
Second year trainee, Aberdeen
"You are whisked off to London, Glasgow and Edinburgh during your first two weeks at the firm. Trainees get the chance to meet all of the other trainees in the firm and attend several workshops and training sessions. This includes training sessions on the firm's IT systems, and various workshops."
First year trainee, Belfast
"There are very good training programmes with people who are approachable and always on hand to help you. I've learned technical skills, attention to detail, organisational skills, drafting skills, presentation skills and advocacy skills. I have also developed client contact and legal expertise as well as knowledge of the law and commercial considerations in the areas I've worked."
First year trainee, London

"The training at the firm is very thorough. You undergo training for each department at the start of each trainee seat and it's supplemented throughout. We also underwent two weeks of training before we started the traineeship, which focussed on professional resilience, negotiation skills, financial information and client development. We have since had ethics training and continue to receive invitations to drafting and legal skills workshops."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"There are quite a broad range of firm-wide initiatives that help to build skills, which are really helpful. Individual teams also tend to put on subject-specific training, which helps to ground you in a new seat. Graduate development also runs preparatory sessions for new qualifier applications and sessions on transitioning to being a new qualifier, which are really helpful."
Second year trainee, London
"I have found that a lot of internal training takes place throughout each seat. This means that, after having received your initial trainee training at the beginning of the seat, you continue to attend other sessions aimed at fee earners in the team. This helps with feeling properly integrated and of course means that you're continually building knowledge."
First year trainee, Leeds
"There's departmental training for each seat that usually consists of two days at another of the firm's offices. Additionally, the firm offers great online training as well as continual lectures and seminars."
First year trainee, Leeds
"As well as having a week of training at the start of the training contract (which is a great opportunity to meet the other trainees from other offices) we have training throughout as well. The advocacy and presentation training were highlights. In particular, I think the presentation training benefitted everyone in the room with practical tips and improving confidence as you get to watch yourself back and it really isn't as bad as you think."
First year trainee, London
"The training that you undertake at the start of the traineeship is amazing. You have training in London and your home office for a week followed by a week of residential training at the Westerwood, which is great!"
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"There's excellent and comprehensive training as well as the opportunity to access training on all manner of topics if you want to. The firm is very supportive and encouraging of training in general."
First year trainee, Glasgow
