Interview Process

"I was an internal applicant, but the process is very similar to someone applying externally. I had to meet certain criteria and have the support of my line manager. I then completed the external application form, was invited to attend a vacation scheme to another department within the firm. I was then invited to the assessment day, which included various role plays, an interview, and a written test."
Second year trainee, Reading
"I completed an online written application followed by an assessment day. The assessment day comprised of a group exercise, interview, written exercise, and role play with an interviewer. The assessment day is updated by the Graduate Recruitment team each year, so there are some differences for this year's candidates."
First year trainee, Manchester
"They are looking for intelligent, commercially aware students who show enthusiasm, personality and potential. If you get to the assessment day, simply be yourself."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"The day was synchronised to be a fluid process with one topical theme. The day evolved around using key legal skills and competencies to demonstrate all-round understanding and ability. Obtaining information from supervisors using information, and asking relevant questions, a group exercise to show prioritisation and time management skills, an interview and literacy skills tests."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"After a vacation scheme with the firm I was invited to an assessment centre. As I knew I loved the firm, the interview process was just a case of getting this across and hoping they felt the same."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I initially applied for the one week vacation scheme. If you do well on the scheme, you will be invited to an assessment day later in the year; this included an interview, a role-play exercise, a group discussion and a written exercise. You will then be offered a training contract if successful."

"There is an initial telephone interview and if successful you will be invited to an assessment centre. The assessment centre consists of a role play, group exercise, written task and an individual interview with competency based questions."
First year trainee, Southampton
"I was asked about my work experience, how I responded to negative/constructive feedback, (and asked to give an example), as well as the standard why do you want to be a solicitor type questions. The interviewers do not see your application form before they interview you on the assessment day so you really have to get everything across and can't rely on your form."
Second year trainee, Reading
"I attended a vacation scheme at Shoosmiths. At the end of this I gave a marketing pitch to the Training Principal that I had prepared during the week and also had an informal discussion about myself and my desire to train with Shoosmiths. I was then invited to the assessment day which consisted of a number of tasks such as group work, writing and planning exercises and an interview."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"You start with an application which asks skills based questions. There is then an assessment day. At the assessment day you take part in an individual exercise, a group exercise, a written exercise and finally a formal interview. It is quite a long and sometimes stressful day but Shoosmiths try hard to make things fun."
First year trainee, Reading
"The process consists of a written application with successful candidates being invited for an assessment day which is a full day including an interview. The assessment is tough with a number of different tasks set during the day such as mock meetings and negotiations. There were no ridiculous questions in the interview."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The assessment centre is rigorous but taking into account the investment that the firm are making in their trainees it's necessary. The questions asked are skills based and seemed like they were phrased to get to know you and there were no really nasty obscure questions."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The assessment is focused around an assessment day which includes an interview, a group activity, a written exercise and an one-on-one role play."
