Trainee Retention

8.4 / 10

(based on 14 ratings in 2019)

2019

"I have no doubt at all that there'll be a place for me as the firm is clearly committed to retaining everyone and is open about that goal. Whether this means that everyone will necessarily get the department they want is a different story and harder to accommodate, but I'd be very surprised if anyone wasn't given an offer unless something went seriously wrong."

"They are very good. The firm generally only hires with the intention of retaining at qualification."
Second year trainee, London
"Retention rates are high and it generally seems that the firm decides who they want to retain rather than how many vacancies there are to fill."
First year trainee, London
"We had 100% retention last year. If it is ever below that it is because a trainee wants to leave for whatever reason."
Second year trainee, London
"Retention rates are high and trainees tend not to worry that they will not be retained. The corporate and litigation departments always hire large numbers of trainees into permanent positions."
Second year trainee, London
"Our retention rates are generally very high and usually close to 100%."

Second year trainee, London
"The retention rates are great, which is one of the benefits of having a slightly smaller intake. The retention rate was 100% this year, so it can't get much better!"
Second year trainee, London
"This year's retention rate was 100% and they are usually over 90%. The retention rate is about as good as it possibly can be, which is great for reducing stress levels during the qualification process. It's also really impactful over your whole training contract, as the trainees are not compelled to try and outdo each other or be competitive in a detrimental way if there is probably a job for everyone who wants one."
Second year trainee, London
"The 100% rate of retention last year speaks for itself. People want to stay and the firm is keen to keep the people it has invested the time and money in training. It is very positive."

"They are usually pretty good in comparison to the rest of the City (although they were slightly worse last year). I am relatively confident of being kept on, but the state of the legal market obviously causes a concern for all current trainees."
