I was lucky enough to attend the TARGETjobs Future Female Engineers event in March2018. I had heard about this event through my university and I was keen to apply when I saw the companies that were attending. As someone who was actively networking and seeking summer opportunities, the application process was similar to that for a summer internship and so was easy to complete. This was followed by a telephone interview. I’ve never had a telephone interview before and so this was a valuable part of the experience. Having passed this, I was delighted to hear that I had been accepted to attend.
I travelled down from Glasgow for the event. The day started with the most amazing, empowering speech from Kate Taylor , the advice of which I still use in my day to day life now! We then split into groups to take part in an ‘assessment centre style’ group activity. As someone who had never attended an assessment centre, this was an amazing opportunity for me. I enjoyed hearing from other students and working with them to try to complete the task to the best of our ability. I was incredibly grateful to have this experience without the pressure of a job interview looming over me, and I am delighted to say our group won the challenge!
We were then able to ask questions on applying for jobs, how to perfect our CV and covering letter and how to prepare for interviews. This information has been so valuable to me. It was at this point I was able to speak to representatives from ExxonMobil. It was so helpful for me to be able to speak to ExxonMobil representatives face to face. They gave us some hints and tips on applying for their internships and graduate schemes and I was able to network with current graduates at ExxonMobil. This was really important to me as it promoted the company to me in a different way to how their website did.
Following the event, once the job posting for their internships was live, one of the company representatives from ExxonMobil contacted me directly on LinkedIn and welcomed my application. I was able to use all of the knowledge I gained from the event to craft my application and I was delighted to be offered an interview, and then the position.
Attending TARGETjobs Future Female Engineers was instrumental to my decision to apply to ExxonMobil and the confidence I had during the process. It was a pleasure to attend and meet other like-minded women engineers and I would encourage anyone to apply who is actively seeking an internship, a graduate opportunity – or even just new female engineering friends!
