This is an exciting opportunity to join the Nuclear Operations Environmental Safety & Sustainability branch of the Safety, Security & Assurance Directorate. We are a central steering function who provide key governance, oversight, and support to the fleet of EDF nuclear power stations in the UK. During EDFs 12-month placement programme, you will have the opportunity to build on the experience gained during your academic studies and progress your career.
What does this Environmental Safety & Sustainability opportunity offer you?
You would be working within a team of existing specialist staff in our Environmental Safety & Sustainability (inc. Radioactive Waste) branch, you'll gain invaluable hands-on experience while being mentored by highly skilled professionals.
You will get involved in a broad spectrum of Environmental Safety & Sustainability areas, gain experience of team working, problem solving, using human performance tools and take part in Environmental Safety & Sustainability and Station related training. You will also have the exciting opportunity to work on plant operations and explore other areas of interest.

Training, development, and support for you
Over the course of this 12-month programme, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in hands-on learning, working on real-world challenges that directly impact the energy industry. Most of your learning will be on the job, supported by your mentor and the teams around you. You’ll have a chance to apply your academic training to genuine industry problems while completing modules that contribute towards your degree.
You'll gain in-depth experience in our Environmental Safety & Sustainability (inc. Radioactive Waste) branch central support function. You’ll learn about systems vital to the smooth operation of nuclear power, including safety protocols, technical governance, analysis, multi-agency interface and communication. You'll have the opportunity to see how other departments within the power station function, expanding your understanding of the broader industry.
Additionally, you will also gain experience of and support engagement with:
- Business stakeholders including other business units, EDF Group and government.
- Regulators within the UK nuclear sector, namely the ONR, EA and SEPA.
- Internal engineers and specialists working across Nuclear Operations, including Nuclear Decommissioning, and Nuclear Services.
Your work location
You will work within our Gloucester office which is located within the Business Park. You will be expected to travel to the power station sites periodically to carry out assurance activities.
Who you are
We are looking for candidates who are on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:2 undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant technical discipline.
You’ll have good analytical skills and an ability to think independently, to identify trends, behaviours and insights that could be effective at helping the organisation improve its performance. You’ll have effective communication and interpersonal skills and be confident to engage internal and external stakeholders. The role will include responding to technical queries and issues including collation of operational experience, we are seeking applicants who are tenacious, have great attention to detail and be results orientated. Our team work closely together, therefore you must be a team player and willing to support when needed.
We will also require you to be adaptable and able to adapt in a progressive working environment where you may be expected to pick up emergent work.
