Graduate job

£25,000 - £30,000

£25k – £30k plus great benefits

90% of schools use CGP books, making us the UK’s No.1 educational publisher. We’re successful because we’re flexible and quick to market with new products, and that’s where you come in…

We’re looking for a Product Developer to join us at our Lake District Head Office. You’ll use your research skills to identify opportunities for fabulous new products, cost up and present your ideas as sound business proposals, then bring your product to life with the help of our in-house Editing and Design teams.

To thrive as a Product Developer, you’ll be a graduate with an impressive academic background and a sound track record in research — this could be a PhD, Masters or from your experience in a relevant role (not necessarily publishing). You’ll have a curious and creative mind, and the ability to analyse complex data to great commercial effect.

The Role

As a CGP Product Developer, you’ll develop educational products to grow sales to schools, retailers and private customers. This could mean coming up with an idea to fill a gap in our existing range, introducing new (or improving existing) products in a current market, or identifying a whole new target market.

Working closely with other in-house Product Developers, you’ll understand and be able to champion what makes CGP products so popular. Just as important, you’ll know what won’t fit with our brand.

In this role you’ll:

  • Research your target market to understand the needs of our customers
  • Analyse sales data to explore market behaviour and identify opportunities for new, profitable publishing
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of competitor products (and our own) to ensure we always stay one step ahead
  • Research and propose fully costed product ideas
  • Work with in-house Editing, Digital & Design and Sales & Marketing teams to ensure that approved ideas are turned into superb products

Personal qualities/attributes

You’ll be a graduate with a sound track record in research — this could be a PhD, Masters or from your experience in a relevant role. A background in the publishing industry isn’t necessary. To be considered, you’ll need to be:

  • Highly numerate and commercially aware – able to evaluate options quickly by simplifying or estimating key figures
  • Confident interrogating complex (and often incomplete) data sets to uncover trends — great Excel skills are a must
  • Creative — with ideas that you can articulate clearly
  • Open-minded, curious and keen to learn (able to ask the right questions)
  • Independent, and a self-starter with the confidence to pursue your own ideas
  • A great communicator – verbally and in writing
  • An excellent listener – able to take on feedback from colleagues, teachers and pupils
  • Whatever your background, you’ll be comfortable working across all subject areas and age groups within the education system
