Benefits

Flexible working patterns

Respecting our employees’ work-life balance is important to us and something that we want to support you with.

We recognise that being able to work flexibly from different locations has its benefits, so in most cases you’ll have the opportunity to work from home 2 days a week.

We care about accommodating different personal and family needs to help you maximise your career potential. To do this we may be able to support flexible start and finish times, and we’ll consider alternative working arrangements such as part-time working.

Annual and special leave privileges

As one of our employees, you’ll get 25 days annual leave when you join us, increasing by 1 day for every year of service up to 30 days. You also get an extra day off for the monarch’s birthday.

We also offer generous maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave, as well as special paid and unpaid leave. You can find out more details in our employee benefits handbook.

You can also take up to 5 days of paid leave for volunteering, allowing you to develop yourself while benefitting your community.

Pension scheme

When you join us, you’ll automatically be enrolled in the Civil Service Pension Scheme. As well as contributing yourself, our additional employer contributions will help your retirement be a little more comfortable compared with some private sector pensions.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

HMRC: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is committed to being a fair, inclusive and representative organisation, both as an employer and in its service to the public. Its approach is guided by statutory obligations under the Equality Act 2010 (England, Scotland, Wales) and Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, with oversight from relevant equality commissions.

Strategic Equality Objectives (2024–2028)

HMRC has set three core objectives:

Representative: Build a workforce that reflects the diversity of the UK, with a focus on increasing representation of women, disabled, and ethnic minority colleagues at senior levels. Recruitment and promotion processes are merit-based and monitored for fairness.

Inclusive: Ensure physical and digital environments are accessible. Workplace adjustments are streamlined, and gaps in colleague experience and retention are addressed. Digital services are designed to meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2).

Respectful: Foster a culture of kindness and belonging. HMRC actively works to reduce bullying, harassment, and discrimination, and provides training to improve awareness of equality obligations.

Customer-Focused Initiatives

Extra Support Teams assist over 150,000 customers annually, offering tailored help including alternative formats (Braille, audio, large print), home visits, and language services (including British Sign Language and Welsh).

Digital Accessibility: HMRC invests in inclusive design and testing, including voice biometrics and interactive guidance tools to improve user experience.

Equality Impact Assessments (EQIAs) are conducted for all major policy and service changes to ensure fair treatment of customers with protected characteristics.

Disability Action Plan (2024–2027)

HMRC’s Disability Action Plan outlines measures to promote positive attitudes and participation of disabled people. It includes:

  • Improving workplace adjustments and recruitment processes.
  • Engaging disabled customers in service design.
  • Partnering with Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations to extend support and raise awareness.

Training and Awareness

Thousands of HMRC colleagues receive training on empathy, safeguarding, and supporting vulnerable customers. Partnerships with organisations like the Samaritans enhance staff capability to handle sensitive interactions.

Our staff diversity networks are open to everyone in HMRC and are a great way to learn more about others and celebrate our diversity. The networks provide a forum to discuss ideas and concerns to help eliminate barriers that exist for our people and customers.

Our staff diversity networks include:

  • disability
  • gender
  • LGBTQ+
  • race
  • social mobility
  • religion or beliefs
  • carers

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is incredibly important to us. Taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing helps increase creativity and job satisfaction and means that we’re more likely to fulfil our potential.

We have a range of initiatives in place to help employees focus on wellbeing. These include our Employee Assistance Programme which offers free, confidential advice and support for a number of issues including work, family and personal issues.

We also regularly hold wellbeing workshops and sessions and have a range of additional resources to support you with everything from physical heath to financial wellbeing.

Personal Development

At HMRC, we offer not just a job, but a rewarding career filled with challenges and opportunities. We’re committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their background, feels respected and valued. Our priority is to ensure that every colleague at HMRC has a voice, feels safe, and can thrive.

Sustainability

HMRC’s North Star is to be the most sustainable community in government. We want to embed sustainability across HMRC to make sure that our community has a positive impact on people and our planet.

Our strategic objectives contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions hard and fast to prevent climate breakdown, minimise the impact of our operations on the planet and drive resilience through climate adaptation measures. We have set an ambitious target of Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Sustainability in HMRC also considers our social impact. Colleagues can have a positive impact directly in their regions through volunteering, which also supports their own development. HMRC offers 5 days Special Leave per year for this purpose. We centrally support several national charities, and colleagues can choose to donate through Payroll Giving. Last year, colleagues donated over £500,000 to hundreds of good causes.

We are committed to making HMRC a great place to work by delivering greater social value, mitigating future climate costs, supporting efficient revenue collection, and delivering impact in the communities that need it most.
