Located in the beautiful historic city of Durham in North-East England, Durham University is a collegiate university with long traditions and modern values. Postgraduate study

We offer over 100 postgraduate taught programmes and many research programmes across Arts and Humanities, Science and Social Sciences and Health. You can apply for a taught course offering lecture, seminar-based or practical study in a specific area, undertake your own studies under expert academic supervision as part of a research degree, or register for a professional doctorate combining taught modules with an extended research thesis.

Flexible study routes are available to fit around your life and preferred style of study, and you can study for most qualifications on a full-time or part-time basis.

Research

Durham University is a world top 100 University where our postgraduate students are fully immersed in the world-class research culture. The results of Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 fully confirm Durham's international profile in research with 83 per cent of Durham’s research being assessed as internationally excellent quality or world leading, categorised as 3* or 4*. REF 2014 identified world-leading research in every Durham University subject. Areas of particular strength include Anthropology, Archaeology, Chemistry, Classics, Education, English, Law, Music, Physics and Theology. For research impact, Chemistry and Education were top amongst their respective subjects in the country and Theology was second nationally.

Modules studied by taught students are developed as a result of this world-class research being conducted, and postgraduate research students work in collaboration with academics to push forward the boundaries of their subject.

Our libraries offer an excellent range of resources, study spaces and services to support postgraduate study and research. Our main library has long opening hours, over 1.60million printed items and over 400,000 online resources

We are committed to delivering an experience outside your studies that is unrivalled in the UK. Over 85% of our students actively participate in sport, music, theatre and volunteering. We focus on performance and leadership, participation and community engagement.
