Delivering on our purpose
We’re a global engineering, management and development consultancy.
Our purpose is to improve society by considering social outcomes in everything we do, relentlessly focusing on excellence and digital innovation, transforming our clients’ businesses, our communities and employee opportunities.
This is how.
Advice that adds advantage
Projects to improve health, education and life chances, and to recover from natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding are all in our portfolio, and always will be. But the potential for contributing to better social outcomes extends far wider.
With you, we’re focused on combating the causes and effects of climate change, managing the coronavirus pandemic, seizing opportunities in digital transformation, and creating and caring for the infrastructure that society depends on.
Our people have taken lead roles in the world’s highest profile infrastructure and development projects. Working with us you have access to the vast knowledge of internationally recognised engineers, project and programme managers, environmentalists, planners, economists, data scientists, app developers, modellers, social scientists, project finance advisors and more. On one hand you get the advantages of size and stability that come from a US$2bn organisation – there are 16,000 of us, delivering projects in Africa, Asia Pacific and Australasia, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, and South Asia. On the other you’ll get the kind of openness, friendliness and personal commitment you might expect from a much smaller business.
Our universe of creative thinkers is centred around you. We’re joined-up across sectors and geographies, meaning that whatever your needs and wherever you are in the world, we will align the right combination of subject and digital expertise to creatively and efficiently meet your ambitions.
Doing what is right
We’re the largest wholly employee-owned firm of our kind. There are no external shareholder priorities to influence our decision making, meaning we can choose the work we take on and focus on the issues that are important to you – and us.
Being independent in thought and action, we’ll advise what is genuinely right for your business. You’ll get the very best from us because we want to do a great job – the right job.
We insist on the highest standards of integrity in all we do. We were the first consultancy firm to be certified to BS 10500, now ISO 37001, the international anti-bribery management standard. This assurance of fairness, openness and honesty applies to all our employees, subconsultants and suppliers everywhere we work. The result is that we are trusted and respected for our integrity and the high quality of everything we do. Excellence at your service
We employ the people everyone else wants to know.
Our people stay with us because they have a stake in the company – we have a retention rate of over 90% for senior staff. So if you like working with someone it’s likely they will be with us for your next job, and the one after that.
Stronger retention gives depth of experience, skills and knowledge. Our ownership model also empowers us to invest in all the core ingredients of excellence: excellent people, supported by industry-leading systems and technology. Professional networks, regular ‘excellence weeks’ and webinars drive learning, fresh ideas and digital innovation throughout the company.
Digitalisation has dissolved physical boundaries, enabling us to create networks and virtual teams worldwide that are as close-knit and effective as the best physically co-located ones. These enable our global sector and practice leaders to provide expertise, share knowledge, spread best practice, collaborate, problem solve and communicate – with the aim of bringing you and all project stakeholders greater benefits, sooner.
When you work with us anywhere in the world you have instant access to our entire network of brilliant people.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Mott MacDonald’s purpose is to ‘improve society by considering social outcomes in all we do, relentlessly focusing on excellence and digital innovation, transforming our clients’ businesses, our communities and employee opportunities’.
Our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is fundamental to the realisation of this purpose; diverse teams will enable us to better understand and meet the needs of clients and communities across the globe, while more inclusive and equitable workplaces will provide fertile ground for learning, innovation and excellence.
Our equality, diversity and inclusion ambition is to lead our sector by example, so that clients, suppliers and employees will want to work with and for us because we are known for being an open, welcoming, and inclusive business. With that in mind we have created ‘Everyone’s Business: Our global equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy’.
We chose this name as it emphasises that everyone in our employee-owned business will benefit from the time and energy we invest in becoming more diverse, equitable and inclusive. The name also highlights that everyone will be accountable for our progress against this strategic business priority.
Our 5-year strategy includes a global EDI vision and approach agreed across every region of our business. We recognised that each of our regions needed different priorities as dictated by their local EDI data and contexts and have captured these in four regional versions (download below) of our strategy, that provide more detail on how and why each region will be progressing towards the shared vision.
We have already made considerable progress towards our vision of becoming a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive business, not only because it’s the right thing to do but because it gives us the best possible foundations from which to deliver our social outcomes purpose.
Wellbeing
What does safety and wellbeing at Mott MacDonald mean?
Our approach to safety and wellbeing is a holistic one, with an equal focus on emotional and physical harm. We consider the duty of care we have to our people, as well as to our clients and partners. Our safeguarding and modern slavery experts ensure the same standards are applied to our supply chains and the communities in which we work.
In addition, we positively influence safety and wellbeing standards through our design and technical advisory work. In this way we can help to improve standards that have an impact on those who construct, maintain, or operate the assets we design. This ensures the benefits we leave behind after our projects are complete are positive and long-lasting.
It is for this reason that our strategy includes sustainable travel elements to ensure we are making decisions as a business that consider both people and planet.
We work closely with our equality, diversity, and inclusion team so that all our programmes support people from all backgrounds.
We are approaching our target of zero harm on physical accidents that affect our people and projects. At the same time, we are becoming increasingly concerned about the rise in mental health and wellbeing issues facing our people. So we took this opportunity to look back at our journey in its entirety to celebrate our achievements but, more importantly, to reflect on ways to continually improve our workplace safety and wellbeing.
A recently launched global training programme for our wellbeing community has provided workplace wellbeing champions and our mental health first aiders with more of the skills and support they need to look after our people in offices and on our projects. This is part of our commitment to adding social value to everything we do.
The development of structured career paths within our business allows colleagues with an interest in safety and wellbeing to enhance their skills and experience outside their day jobs. This helps us to embed the importance and accountability we all have as individuals and as a company to look after our people.
Sustainability
Running a business responsibly is key to its long-term sustainability: all decisions we make have consequences for society.
Sustainability helps us ensure that those consequences are positive, adding value for our clients and the communities we work in. Our vision is to be a leading global partner in advancing sustained economic, social and environmental wellbeing. We aim to do this by putting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals at the heart of our business.
