2019

"The induction week is a full-on week designed for you to meet all the other trainees, and learn about the firm and its values, how it works and what is expected of you as a trainee. Then, once you're in your home office, there is a separate local induction."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"The firm has introduced a quarterly training day for trainees to teach more soft skills such as resilience, stress management and how to apply for new qualifier roles etc. These are useful and a good way to catch up with other trainees from the other offices. There should be more formal legal training though as this does help when it's provided. Non-legal skills I've picked up include organising events (internally, for clients and for Birmingham young professionals), time management and the confidence to speak up when needed."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"The firm makes sure that you get all the experiences you would as a solicitor and, if you feel that your training is lacking in something, they will always try to accommodate your needs. I have enhanced my communication, research, negotiating, advocacy and legal writing skills."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The training contract consists of four six-months seats. You communicate with your training principal as to which seats you would like and they will try to accommodate you as far as possible."
First year trainee, Manchester
"The firm invests a lot of time ensuring that we are prepared for doing our job. Not only have we been given multiple training sessions on matters such as systems and the firm's culture, but also the team I am in is always happy to help me learn how to do something if I find myself unsure about how to complete a task."
First year trainee, Reading
"We have a trainee induction week, get training within our department that extends to attending national office training days and trainees have professional skills course training over two years."
First year trainee, Reading

"The firm does offer a lot of training sessions and the new ability to do cross-office training on the IT systems is really helpful."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"I have completed the professional skills course, which is required of all trainees. We are also actively encouraged to attend training sessions run by the department we are in to enhance our skills."
First year trainee, Manchester
"There's great-quality training on a wide range of legal skills including drafting and advocacy. My time management and IT skills have also improved."

"You are assigned a supervisor in your department who makes sure you are given a good range of work to do. The firm also pays for external training programmes to ensure you meet the Law Society's requirements."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"We have a great learning and development team and a number of business courses."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"Excellent induction week training programme where all new trainees had a week together in Birmingham. It was a great bonding opportunity."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"Training varies from team to team. Some can be very useful but some can also be re-iterating skills and lessons learned on the job."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes

2015

"I would definitely say that there is recognition of the importance of training. A developing lawyers programme is running for junior lawyers, and it is giving team training on an ad hoc basis. Soft skills are taught on Professional Skills Courses, and mentors monitor development and assist with guidance on soft skills and office etiquette."
Second year trainee, Reading
"Training at Shoosmiths is excellent, and offers brilliant exposure to work."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"There is a training principal at the firm, and each trainee has a supervisor."
First year trainee, Southampton
"A lot of training is on-the-job, and you develop throughout your training contract. I have had a lot more client exposure and have also been allowed to try my hand at more tasks, which has helped me develop and train myself. My supervisors have encouraged me to complete a first draft and will then provide constructive feedback on areas to improve/areas which I had done well. The firm is also keen to get us involved with business development and recruitment and you are also exposed to the billing process."
First year trainee, Southampton

2014

"Continuous development is an important focus for the firm."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"There are personal development courses available throughout the year to supplement legal training sessions, and these are run by each department."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"There are junior lawyer training sessions along with practice group specific bi-weekly training sessions."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The firm runs a developing lawyer programme across the different practice groups aimed at junior lawyers from paralegals - two year PQE. They are great sessions which cover key aspects of the work you're involved with and numerous training sessions within the practice groups and departments. The practice groups also organise training away days which involve the whole of the national teams."
First year trainee, Manchester
"A lot of time is invested in trainee development, for which we have checklists and regular reviews with partners and one-on-one time with associates/partners."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"I feel that the firm really invests in our development. Our one week induction programme was excellent and we had lots of training in IT, accounts and other aspects."
First year trainee, Reading

2013

"The firm's Developing Lawyer programme is a series of workshops which have allowed me to network with IHLs and gain an overview of important topics in commercial and corporate."
First year trainee, Southampton
"Gaining a broad range of skills is actively encouraged. The firm runs regular focused training for junior lawyers in the Developing Lawyer programme for Corporate/Commercial. Other departments have similar sessions but are less structured. Employment runs specific technical training for trainees."
Second year trainee, Reading
"The programme is well structured with all supervisors trying hard to expose trainees to a range of issues in their seats."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
