(based on 12 ratings in 2019)

2019

"The staff at all levels are very approachable and are happy to take time out of their day to talk you through the work and any feedback. I've been working with partners and legal directors a lot and they have all been very nice and patient with the work. When I first joined, everyone offered to sit down and have a chat with me about the seat as they knew I hadn't experienced this area of law before."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"My supervisor is very approachable and is always willing to explain things, even when I ask a silly question."
First year trainee, Southampton
"My supervisor is great. We have already had a one-to-one that set out what I could expect over the next six months. When my supervisor is not in the office, the rest of the team is on hand to help with my development and they always make sure I have something to be doing. As someone who has never worked in a law firm before, I find them very understanding when tasks take me perhaps longer than originally anticipated. They are also very adept at talking topics through."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"Everyone is willing to sit down and go through work you have completed while giving substantive feedback."
First year trainee, Manchester
"People are very accessible. During the first week of my training contract, a high-ranking partner in the department took me for a coffee to get to know me and explain how the department runs. He didn't have to do that, he chose to because he wanted me to feel welcome."
First year trainee, Reading
"All trainees are assigned a supervisor who arranges regular one-to-ones on a monthly basis to check in on our development and to discuss any concerns. We also have a trainee principal for the office, who is another level of support. This position is often held by a senior associate or partner."
First year trainee, Reading

2018

"All of the solicitors and partners are accessible and make good mentors. Each trainee has a mid-seat review and an end-of-seat review with their seat supervisor and this feedback helps you to develop your skills throughout your training contract. Praise is given by everyone and the firm has 'above and beyond' awards where you can recommend a colleague to get vouchers."
First year trainee, Solent
"Partners and other senior colleagues are very accessible. You are often praised and recognised for your hard work through an internal recognition programme where you are nominated to receive vouchers."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"As with any firm, some solicitors are incredible supervisors while others take more of a distant approach to giving you work and engender an atmosphere where you cannot ask questions directly. In general, feedback is good and praise is forthcoming when due."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"My team is very accessible and I can ask question of any member of the team ranging from partners to paralegals and PAs."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Everyone is personable and friendly and the supervision is supportive without being overbearing."
First year trainee, Whiteley, Southampton
"Feedback is constantly given from a number of sources and the culture is such that someone is always on hand to help you. Asking questions is always seen as a positive."
First year trainee, Northampton

2016

"People at the firm are generally happy to assist you. There is an 'above and beyond' scheme where each employee gets £75 to award to employees who have gone that extra mile for them."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"Open plan office makes it really easy to ask for guidance."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The large majority of colleagues are very accessible to provide feedback. Many are very willing to spend time to explain their work, and feedback is generally given in great depth."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"I know this can vary depending on who you are working with, but my experience so far has been very positive."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Feedback is regular and constructive. I have always felt able to ask questions."
Second year trainee, Solent

2015

"It is an open-plan office - so it's always an 'open-door' policy, unless someone is clearly very busy! This encourages trainees to ask questions and make the most of the knowledge of other staff."
First year trainee, Reading
"Mentors at the firm are good, and you have regular catch-ups with your supervisor and/or mentor, which are expected."
Second year trainee, Reading
"There is an excellent support network at the firm and solicitors and partners are always willing to give feedback."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"Solicitors are all generally very approachable and I can speak to the majority of them about anything. Partners are also approachable, but are naturally busier. There is a good level of informal feedback from supervisors on a weekly/fortnightly basis, and it is nice to receive praise in front of the rest of the team every now and again for good work. A generally great culture exists at Shoosmiths too."
First year trainee, Southampton
"Everyone is very approachable and interested in helping you develop as a solicitor. As well as being able to speak with our training principal and supervisors, we also have access to a trainee mentor."
First year trainee, Southampton

2014

"The open office plan makes everyone accessible, and the partners are always approachable."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"Our direct supervisor will usually be a senior associate, with a partner above. I have always found my supervisors to be really engaged in helping me progress from ensuring that I get the best experience whilst in their department, to advising me on progression. Each office also has a training principal who is always there to discuss your seat choices/career progression and developmental needs."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"I believe that the accessibility of senior staff at Shoosmiths is one of the elements which sets the firm apart from others - any member of staff will go out of their way to assist trainees on a matter."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"Mentors are very accessible, and are always willing to assist with feedback and queries we have. Praise and recognition could be better, but it is generally very good."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"Everyone is very accessible and most people have made a genuine effort to help me hone my skills. Only occasionally, I've found it hard to get feedback from some people and had to chase it."
First year trainee, Reading

2013

"Partners are accessible due to the 'open-door' policy."
First year trainee, Southampton
"Varies from department to department but on the whole very good. I have never had a problem with supervision."
Second year trainee, Reading
"Extremely accessible. I have monthly updates with my mentor who checks that I am not having any issues and I really feel like I can talk to about anything. I also have a formal eight week review with my supervisor and an end-of-seat review to highlight any problems I have experienced."
First year trainee, Reading
"Everyone is happy to take the time to answer questions and give guidance."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The great thing about Shoosmiths is how approachable and helpful everyone is. As a trainee you often need to ask questions from how do I work the photocopier to a complex legal question. All the Partners sit amongst their teams, they are not shut off in separate offices and you can ask them questions and they understand that you are here to learn and are happy to help."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
