London recruits 6 trainees each year meaning we can offer challenging international work, lots of responsibility and client contact. Our smaller size in London and the size of intake means you are a highly visible and important part of our working teams. You will have all the excitement and challenge of working on high-value, complex transactions and disputes (often with partners who are leaders in their fields), but also reap the benefits of a supportive and collegiate working environment. We're fiercely proud of our reputation for being a truly friendly firm. The main route to a training place is via our summer scheme. We offer up to 8 summer placements each year. We limit the number of places in order to give participants a really 'hands-on' experience, normally in two differing areas. This enables the individual to really engage in a variety of work, with a variety of people and increases the opportunity to really get to know the firm, its culture and the work it does. We also offer a number of open days throughout the year.

Trainees will rotate every six months through some of the firm's contentious and non-contentious specialisms in corporate, regulatory and litigation areas. Trainees have input into their seat choices.
What we look for
If you want to consider joining Cooley you will need to be stimulated by solving business and legal challenges. Academic excellence (minimum 2.1 and at least 300 UCAS points or equivalent), great analytical skills and a rigorous approach are essential. You should be able to demonstrate plenty of energy, drive and determination. Your understanding of business and commercial considerations, in addition to client relationships should be of a good standard. You will also be adaptable and capable of thinking on your feet. You should have developed great communication and interpersonal skills from a variety of situations. Understanding teamwork, evidence of leadership and seeking responsibilities are vital. Interesting achievements and making the most of non-academic and work experience (not necessarily all legal) opportunities will help applicants stand-out.
