Cooley

The firm

Cooley’s lawyers solve legal issues for entrepreneurs, investors, financial institutions and established companies. Clients partner with Cooley on transformative deals, complex IP and regulatory matters, and high-stakes litigation, often where innovation meets the law. On 12 January 2015, more than 55 lawyers, including some of the UK's top practitioners and other professionals joined together in one of the largest ever openings of a US law firm in London. Cooley's UK practice has strengths across many of its core practice areas, among them corporate/M&A, venture capital, technology and life sciences transactions, IP, complex high-stakes litigation, insurance & reinsurance, financial services regulation, competition, employment, data protection and privacy. Cooley has 850 lawyers across 12 offices in the United States, China and Europe.

We are the counsellors, strategists and advocates for today's and tomorrow's leaders of the business economy. We seek to meet the evolving needs of our clients by building a community of professionals of the highest calibre who share our vision and embrace our values. We are dedicated to maintaining a truly diverse workplace that values and celebrates differences – from the way we relate to and support each other, to the way we work together as one firm to meet the needs of our clients. It is the unique abilities and perspectives of every individual at Cooley that creates a rewarding workplace.

Opportunities

London recruits 6 trainees each year meaning we can offer challenging international work, lots of responsibility and client contact. Our smaller size in London and the size of intake means you are a highly visible and important part of our working teams. You will have all the excitement and challenge of working on high-value, complex transactions and disputes (often with partners who are leaders in their fields), but also reap the benefits of a supportive and collegiate working environment. We're fiercely proud of our reputation for being a truly friendly firm. The main route to a training place is via our summer scheme. We offer up to 8 summer placements each year. We limit the number of places in order to give participants a really 'hands-on' experience, normally in two differing areas. This enables the individual to really engage in a variety of work, with a variety of people and increases the opportunity to really get to know the firm, its culture and the work it does. We also offer a number of open days throughout the year.

Training

Cooley is wholly committed to recruiting and providing excellent training to trainees in London. The hallmarks of the training experience we can offer will revolve around small groups of trainees and really hands-on involvement. We truly believe in learning by doing. You will get real responsibility on some of the highest quality work for the highest quality clients. The smaller teams you will work in will lead to high levels of partner contact but also the sense that you can make a substantial contribution with both your thoughts and actions. There will be plenty of opportunities for client contact. All of this comes in an environment where people enjoy working together as a team and are supportive and respectful of each other. Cooley is proud to be recognised as one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" in 2014.

Trainees will rotate every six months through some of the firm's contentious and non-contentious specialisms in corporate, regulatory and litigation areas. Trainees have input into their seat choices.

What we look for

If you want to consider joining Cooley you will need to be stimulated by solving business and legal challenges. Academic excellence (minimum 2.1 and at least 300 UCAS points or equivalent), great analytical skills and a rigorous approach are essential. You should be able to demonstrate plenty of energy, drive and determination. Your understanding of business and commercial considerations, in addition to client relationships should be of a good standard. You will also be adaptable and capable of thinking on your feet. You should have developed great communication and interpersonal skills from a variety of situations. Understanding teamwork, evidence of leadership and seeking responsibilities are vital. Interesting achievements and making the most of non-academic and work experience (not necessarily all legal) opportunities will help applicants stand-out.

Applications welcome from both law and non-law disciplines.
