As a mathematics student I felt that IT’s not just for the boys! was a very useful event for me to attend. Not only did it give me an introduction to careers within technology, but it gave me the opportunity to talk to successful women in this field.
I heard about the event through my university’s careers service. Being unsure about what I’d like to pursue as a career, I decided to apply to learn more about a career path I knew little about. The application process was simple and I heard back from TARGETjobs quite quickly. It involved completing an online application form and following that was a telephone interview.
The event was an enjoyable experience and, for me, the best part of the event was the panel session. It was extremely inspiring listening to the women on stage talk about their lives and the paths they have taken to get to where they are now. What was really amazing was how varied each of their routes were and the differences they have had. As a woman it is inspirational hearing the success stories of other women in a field that is so male dominated.
During the networking portion of the day I had the opportunity to talk to many people from various companies. Specifically I met a recruiter from BT. Talking to her helped me gain my internship. We discussed several opportunities BT offers students, from internships to graduate placements. After expressing my interest in learning more about BT and careers in technology, she offered to get me a couple days of shadowing/work experience at BT and of course I accepted. Following the shadowing/work experience I applied to their summer internship.
TARGETjobs really helped me in securing this placement. It was my first introduction to this career path and the event helped me gain both my work experience and my internship at BT.
