I’m completing an MSc in computer science but came from an undergraduate background in accounting and finance. As a newbie in the tech industry, IT’s not just for the boys! was the first stepping stone for me to navigate my technology career. I came across this event on my university newsletter, which included an advert from TARGETjobs.
The application process for the event was simple but also resembled the first stage of many job applications. I submitted a CV alongside a straightforward form highlighting how I could benefit from the event and showcasing my capabilities, matching with what the participating employers were looking for. Very promptly, I was contacted to arrange a quick call with Bev, a member of the TARGETjobs Events team. The call was informal and informative and we discussed my passion and what I wanted to achieve at IT’s not just for the boys!. A few days after that, I received the invitation with details on what to expect on the day and useful advice on how to best prepare for this event.
The best part of the day was the genuine interest from both the employers and the students participating. The girls I met were all keen to get to know each other, which created an inspiring and open atmosphere. The employers were also approachable and eager to talk to us, not just about their company but also to learn about our background and passion, which removed the awkwardness that often occurs at traditional careers fairs
I met my now employer on the day! My conversation with the lovely Katie from Arm inspired me to apply and my application was fast-tracked thanks to the connection I made on the day. I was also very lucky to be interviewed by Sara who took part in the panel discussion. IT’s not just for the boys! played a massive part in giving me the inspiration and the confidence to secure my placement.
