Description

Oxford Economics is the world's foremost independent economic advisory firm. We have a fantastic opportunity for hard-working economics / finance students to join our team in the United Kingdom on a one year industrial placement. Positions are available on the following teams: Macro Forecasting & Analysis, Cities & Regions, Global Industry, Scenarios & Macro Modelling, Data Team, Macro Consulting, Economic Impact, Economic Footprint & Sustainability, and Tourism Economics.

The Programme

We have an opportunity for successful candidates to gain experience within areas related to their degree subject. Our students will work closely with our experienced team of economists and take on some responsibility for analysis, country forecasting and econometrics. By joining our teams, you will achieve an in-depth practical knowledge related to your degree subject.

The Role

Placement positions are available in several areas within the business, each offering unique experiences:

Macro Forecasting & Analysis (London)

Using the Oxford Economics Global Economic Model, the macro forecasting and analysis team produces forecasts for GDP, inflation, interest rates and hundreds of other indicators for more than 200 countries updated twice a month. The team also produces written analysis on the implications of the latest economic data and policy news, and in-depth research on critical issues impacting economies and financial markets. Positions are available within the Macro Strategy and Emerging Markets, Real Estate, and Eurozone teams. A particular interest in macroeconomics, quantitative analysis, and financial markets is beneficial.

Cities & Regions (London & Belfast)

Our unique suite of forecasting services covers over 8,000 cities and regions across the world, providing regularly updated data, forecasts, and analysis for each location. Placement students will assist in producing these regional forecasts, supporting economists in developing the quality of our services, and exploring novel approaches to data estimation. Students will develop technical skills across the MS office suite, Eviews, and the mapping software QGIS.

Global Industry (London)

Our team comprises economists focused on specific sectors across the countries. Placement students support economists in forecasting industries and contribute to monthly and quarterly reports. Assignments include forecasting small macroeconomic countries and writing for monthly and quarterly publications. The industry team works on consultancy projects for large firms and trade associations, providing opportunities to write reports and analysis.

Scenarios & Macro Modelling (London)

The team focuses on designing scenarios and macroeconomic models to help clients assess the impact of global risks. Using Oxford Economics’ Global Economic Model, students gain exposure to economic consulting and are responsible for developing macroeconomic scenarios by the end of the year.

Macro Consulting (Belfast)

The team specializes in applied macroeconomic consulting and research, assisting clients in decision-making amid uncertainty. Placement students contribute to thought-leadership analysis on global issues, produce country economic forecasts, and partake in weekly and monthly projects.

Economic Impact (London)

We show the social, environmental, and economic impact of our clients’ activities and assist in communicating these to stakeholders. The role involves assisting team members on a wide range of projects, with tasks varying according to the project.

Economic Footprint & Sustainability (London)

The team supports clients in addressing economic and policy challenges of climate change and the transition to net zero. Responsibilities adapt to specific project requirements, helping assess sustainability policies, environmental regulation, and decarbonisation strategies.

Tourism Economics (London & Belfast)

Dedicated to forecasting and analytical consulting in the tourism sector, the team handles projects ranging from tracking and forecasting travel sector performance to conducting policy and market analysis. Tasks change depending on the project’s scope.
