Our Central London team is looking for talented and enthusiastic analysts to perform weapon system assessments for our UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) customer. The role will suit those with a STEM background who wish to apply their abilities in a technical analysis and systems assessment environment.
The type of project you will be working on:
- Customer Integration: You will be a member of a weapons project team within our larger Defence Analytics Group working in Central London. The group is integrated into a joint unit with government employees, members of the armed forces, and other contractors.
- The Challenge: To conduct analysis to assess the performance and capability of weapon systems. Problems are solved through the application of scientific methods, physical principles, and analytics to complex data sets. This process may involve new techniques and their encapsulation in improved tools.
- Collaboration: You will be working in close liaison with similar teams within the UK and partner nations. This includes the opportunity to contribute, influence, challenge, and improve joint ways of working and knowledge.
- Breadth: You will be working in an environment where both the complexity and capabilities of the systems are continually evolving throughout the world.
What you’ll do:
- Conduct analysis through the application of physical principles to real-world problems. This will be facilitated using the suite of in-house software tools and the occasional development of ad-hoc software, primarily in Python.
- Produce reports and presentations of your work and present them to local MOD customers and the wider community both within the UK and partner nations.
- Provide ad hoc advice and support to MOD customers, often at short notice.
- Travel for technical exchanges with our partners, in the UK and potentially abroad.
What we need from you:
- All of our Industrial Placement roles require you to be currently studying a relevant degree discipline, such as a STEM subject with an emphasis on numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to apply these to real-world problems.
- A good understanding of scientific methods and their use through the application of fundamental physical principles.
- Good interpersonal skills to facilitate collaborative and effective working within an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to problem-solve and self-steer, work to deadlines as necessary, sometimes at short notice.
- Ability to communicate, both in writing and verbally, with audiences of differing technical backgrounds and seniority.
It would be nice if you had:
- Although not essential, an appreciation of and interest in aerospace technologies.
- Experience of Python and C# would be a distinct advantage.
What you will get:
- Impact: You will help ensure that MOD’s weapon assessments are robust and delivered in a timely manner to UK Defence partners and front-line forces.
- Opportunity: You will play a key role in MOD weapon assessment which is a critical input to MOD’s equipment procurement programs.
- Knowledge: You will develop an understanding of weapon systems and how they operate.
- Skills: You will develop a range of analytical, software, and interpersonal skills.
- Insights: You will work within a Leonardo team that is fully integrated with its MOD customer, providing an excellent opportunity to see up-close how the MOD operates.
- Teamwork: You will work with a diverse technical team in a highly collaborative environment.
Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business, which includes having a minimum of 5 years of permanent residency in the UK.
