A Future with purpose

At Arup we’re dedicated to sustainable development and to do socially useful work that has meaning. Our purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We solve the world's most complex problems and deliver what seems impossible. We explore challenges with curiosity and creativity - using technology, imagination and rigour to deliver remarkable outcomes.

The Opportunity

Our Building Engineering team is growing rapidly, and we are delighted to be seeking highly motivated individuals to join our team of building physics specialists in our group. The team is all about applying the principles of physics to deliver masterplans, and buildings that feel good, are resilient to climate change, operate efficiently and are kind to the environment. From your first day, you will join an unrivalled community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification. You will help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you will have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we will give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills.

Working under the guidance and supervision of the experienced team, you will develop your existing knowledge and skills in energy modelling and assist with the development of energy and sustainability strategies for new build and existing buildings through the following types of work:

  • Building physics and parametric model services
  • Building performance and operational energy optimisation
  • Certification and compliance including NABERS, Passivhaus and Building Regulations
  • Health and wellbeing advice and guidance
  • Net zero and whole life carbon services
  • Sustainability design and ESG services

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Built Environment, Sustainability, Energy, Architectural or Building Services Engineering, ideally with a specialism in Building Physics and/or energy modelling
  • You will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of building physics, particularly in relation to heat transfer, energy, thermal comfort and natural ventilation. A particular focus on understanding and the modelling of energy consumption and carbon emissions in buildings and a good technical understanding of factors that affect it
  • Ability to use dynamic thermal modelling software such as IES:VE, DesignBuilder or similar
  • A keen interest in developing digital design tools to help automate engineering processes
  • A working knowledge of climate-based daylighting analysis, operational energy calculation using TM:54, sustainability rating tools such as NABERS, BREEAM and life cycle carbon costing would also be beneficial
  • Ideally you will have an understanding of Parametric Modelling Techniques (Grasshopper/Dynamo or similar), or at least one modern programming language (e.g. Python, C#, VB). An understanding of Engineering Optimisation Techniques, the principles of structured programming and basic knowledge in the application of Machine Learning would also be desirable
  • Planned and organised approach to work and meeting deadlines
  • Enthusiasm for a career for analysis in the built environment underpinned by an understanding of our sector and work
  • Analytical thought process
  • Creative approach to problem solving and effective communication
  • Aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive

We're looking for people who are curious and ready to evolve how you think and work. Our greatness comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. If you can share your knowledge and ideas and encourage others to do the same; whilst having a desire to deliver excellent services for clients – we'd like to hear from you.

You should be able to start this opportunity in September 2025.
