Description

Swindon Borough Council are on an exciting journey to transform service delivery. We want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision in the new Swindon Plan is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.

Your Next Role

Are you a recent or upcoming graduate looking to kickstart your career in building surveying? Join our team to gain hands-on experience managing and maintaining a diverse local authority property portfolio.

Under the mentorship of senior professionals, you will develop your technical expertise, learn to identify building defects, and build a strong foundation for your professional accreditation.

You will support the inspection, repair, maintenance, and improvement of the Council’s housing and corporate property portfolio. Working under the guidance of experienced professionals, you’ll:

  • Assist with condition surveys and defect diagnosis across housing and corporate buildings. Identify common risks, defects and compliance issues under supervision.
  • Help draft basic technical work packages and specifications under expert guidance.
  • Support the collection and reporting of data on service level agreements (SLAs), key performance indicators (KPIs), and statutory obligations. Supporting budget tracking, contractor performance reviews, and invoice processing.
  • Contribute ideas for improving processes and service outcomes.
  • Learn to apply CDM regulations and promote safe working practices on site.
  • Respond to routine enquiries, explaining technical matters clearly.

What We Are Looking For

  • Education: A degree (or expected completion) in Building Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Professional Goals: A strong desire to work towards professional accreditation.
  • Technical Knowledge: A foundational understanding of UK building regulations and building pathology.
  • Practical Skills: Familiarity with basic surveying techniques and the ability to interpret technical drawings.
  • Tools: Competence in Microsoft Office and in house systems.
  • Attributes: Proactive, eager to learn, and highly safety conscious.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).

The role requires travel throughout the Borough and access to a vehicle to undertake property inspections and site visits.

Your Next Package

Please see our Rewards and Benefits offer for more details.

As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work-life balance.

For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, revitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.
