Our Wilton International site, located within the Teesside Freeport, sits at the heart of a hub for decarbonisation and innovation. Here, we provide energy-intensive industrial businesses with combined heat and power (CHP) through our private wire network, supplying electricity generated from gas and biomass. These capabilities are complemented by our fleet of fast-acting, decentralised power stations and battery energy storage assets across England and Wales.

Purpose of Role

As a Graduate Energy Trader, you will be responsible for supporting the optimisation of Sembcorp Energy UK's generation assets within the UK Energy markets. You will be required to monitor markets and report on any market drivers, as well as identifying any potential risks to Sembcorp's portfolio.

Following a full training period, during which you will be mentored throughout, you will be working as part of a shift team which works on a 12-hour rotation, ensuring that the Trading desk is always covered.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Working 12-hour shifts as part of a 24/7 Shift team.
  • Execute approved strategies in trading for both the Power and Gas markets.
  • Oversee Sembcorp’s generation profile in compliance with their contracts, such as Ancillary Services and Balancing Mechanism.
  • Control our flexible generation assets in real-time.
  • Execute dispatch instructions from system operators (e.g., NESO).
  • Manage asset availability, outages, and operational constraints.
  • Track outages, grid constraints, and system imbalances (e.g., NESO signals in the UK).
  • Support trade scheduling and ensure everything is allocated correctly.
  • Analyse UK Power and Gas market fundamentals, weather forecasts, and price drivers.
  • Work alongside field service engineers to support safe operations of our flexible generation assets.
  • Monitor asset alarms in real time for our flexible generation assets.
  • Enhance the development and optimisation of trading strategies for Sembcorp’s current and future assets from grid services, intra-day, day ahead.
  • Oversee Sembcorp’s generation profile in compliance with their contracts, such as Ancillary Services and Balancing Mechanism.

Skills and Experience

  • A relevant Degree such as Maths, Economics, Business or Finance is preferred.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office.
  • Enthusiasm to learn about the UK Energy markets.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Demonstrable attention to detail.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to health and safety.
  • The right to work in the UK.
  • Desirable: Experience in the UK Power/Gas markets, although not required, as full training will be provided.
  • Experience of analysing large datasets.
  • Programming knowledge/skills.

As part of a 24/7 Shift Trading team, the Graduate Energy Trader will be a strong team player who is able to demonstrate a flexible and positive attitude. The role will require excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, influencing, and organisation skills as well as strong commercial acumen. Attention to detail and the ability to focus on priorities under pressure and within strict time constraints is required as well as the ability to act quickly in a fast-paced environment.
