Background and Context
The Humber Outreach Programme (HOP) is the Humber region's partnership within the Office for Students' Uni Connect programme. It works collaboratively to reduce educational inequalities and support young people from underrepresented backgrounds in making informed decisions about their future education and career pathways.
The University of Hull is the lead institution for a consortium of nine higher education providers, regional schools, the four Humber local authorities, two Local Skills Improvement Partnerships, and the Skills & Growth Hubs/Careers Enterprise Company, which oversee the Humber Outreach Programme (HOP). The consortium has been working collaboratively on outreach and attainment raising to schools and colleges with the aim of increasing progression to higher education.
The Programme works with schools, colleges, community engagement partners, and various stakeholders across the region to effectively support young people from under-represented backgrounds in breaking down barriers to accessing all Higher Education pathways and supporting the government's social mobility and skills strategies. The programme delivers activities, events, online courses, information via websites and publications, as well as careers guidance, mentoring, attainment raising and funding.
The post will see the successful candidate based at the University of Hull, working in a hybrid model, involving travel to deliver sessions and attending meetings across the HOP region, including (Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire & North East Lincolnshire) and some homeworking. The postholder will work in collaboration with HOP partner organisations to support, create, evaluate, and deliver activities and events for a secondary and post-16 audience based upon the HOP core outreach programme including face-to-face IAG and attainment raising sessions.
Funding has been awarded to HOP by the Office for Students (OfS) since January 2017 to deliver the Uni Connect Programme. Initially funded until August 2027, the OfS is currently undertaking a review to secure a longer-term funding model from 2027 onwards.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
A graduate internship is a time-limited, structured work experience that includes an element of training. It provides work experience and skills development that can enhance employability and career prospects, helping to transition into the world of work and prepare for future employment.
At the HOP, we strongly believe that higher education pathways should be an option for anyone who aspires to go to university or undertake a higher technical pathway e.g. apprenticeship. We want to ensure that all students have the knowledge and confidence to progress onto higher education pathways regardless of socio-economic background, disabilities, ethnicity, or gender.
A key strategy in engaging with young people from our region's schools and colleges is providing relatable role models and real-life examples that students from their own diverse backgrounds can progress and succeed in higher education and beyond.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Delivering interactive face-to-face outreach and attainment raising workshops and presentations to students (aged 13-18) within HOP partner schools and colleges as stipulated in the HOP operating plan.
- Supporting events on campus, including directing the work of Student Ambassadors, delivering activities, conducting 1:1 and group sessions with students, event administration, liaising with schools/colleges or groups and academic staff leading sessions or third-sector organisations. This may include delivery of sessions, leading tours and organisation on the day.
- Working as a member of the HOP outreach team to create and develop student-focused interactive workshops, activities, and materials to raise young people’s awareness of Higher Education topics/pathways and courses/routes available to study.
- Overseeing data collection within schools and colleges, assisting with event reporting, and monitoring student engagement. Ensuring personal and sensitive data is handled and stored in accordance with relevant data protection legislation.
- Completing administrative duties within HOP processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. This includes, but is not limited to, financial administrative activity, relationship management, data input, event administration, and project report writing.
- Being flexible and adaptable in approach to work routines and undertaking any other duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the HOP Programme Manager following consultation with the postholder.
- Supporting university events such as Open Days, Registration, and Graduation Ceremonies.
- Ability to travel extensively around the four Humber local authorities.
