The King’s School, Canterbury

The King’s School, Canterbury, one of the country’s leading schools with a rich musical heritage, invites applications for a Graduate Musician in Residence from September 2026.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a recent music graduate seeking a dynamic and enriching year within a major independent school. The role would equally suit someone considering a future in music education or performance, with a great deal of meaningful experience across the full spectrum of school music-making.

Responsibilities

The Graduate Musician in Residence will contribute to the day-to-day running of a lively, diverse, and thriving Music Department. Responsibilities include chamber music coaching, sectional rehearsals for orchestral ensembles, and supporting our choral programme, including in weekly sung worship in Canterbury Cathedral. The role also includes supervising practice, helping to manage music scholars’ schedules, and providing assistance in the classroom.

Opportunities

For the right candidate, there may also be opportunities to contribute to academic Music teaching, making this an excellent stepping-stone for those exploring whether school teaching might be the right long-term pathway.

Application Deadline

The post will be closed once we have appointed to the position, and therefore early applications are advised.

Commitment

The King’s School is committed to ensuring the highest levels of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our pupils, and we expect all our staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We adopt a fair, robust, and consistent recruitment process which is in line with the statutory Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance. This includes online checks for shortlisted candidates.

Conditions
