Job overview

For nearly five centuries, Christ’s Hospital has pioneered social mobility and challenged social inequality to provide an unrivalled start in life for disadvantaged children. As economic and social inequality continue to grow in the UK, Christ’s Hospital’s mission is as relevant today as it was in 1552. The school is unique. We are strikingly unlike any other independent school in the UK, with a richly diverse pupil body, both in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic background. More than 75% of our pupils are on some form of financial support, with a considerable number receiving full bursaries.

We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic Technician to work primarily in the Physics Department. There may be occasions where the technician will need to assist in other science departments in the school. This position is a full time in term time with some additional hours in holidays. The successful applicant will start work on 28 August 2025. Actual Salary: £21,524 per annum based on a full time equivalent of £27,385.

Physics is a thriving department at Christ’s Hospital. For 2025/26, there will be 7 full-time teachers of physics teaching in 5 newly refurbished and well-resourced teaching labs. The department receives a healthy budget for the continual renewal and upgrading of its practical equipment. Practical experimentation remains a fundamental part of Physics education at the school, and the role of technician is key to delivering this effectively for our students.

You will need to hold a qualification in a scientific discipline at A level (or equivalent) plus a further science qualification or have relevant experience of working in a scientific laboratory.

Alongside the provision, preparation, and administration of the practical equipment used in lessons throughout the school, the Physics technician’s role includes the maintenance of records, chemicals, stock lists, and prep rooms and some administrative duties. The Physics technician is a key voice in discussions relating to the purchasing of new equipment and assists the Head of Department in acquiring new and exciting lab demonstrations and practical activities.

The Physics technician works with the department to ensure that laboratories are kept in order, and that health and safety procedures are followed.

Hours of work are 35 hours per week 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday in term time, plus a total of five full days during the school holidays at the beginning or end of each term (15 per year).

We are unable to accept CVs alone without a completed application form.

Applications must be submitted via the TES portal by the closing date.

Interviews will take place at the school on Tuesday 6 May 2025.

Christ’s Hospital is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All successful applicants are required to complete an enhanced disclosure application with the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service).
