Location: Farnborough | Hours: 37 hours per week, including one protected study day | Contract: Apprenticeship contract | Start date: January 2027 | Eligibility: Aged 21 or under on 1 January 2027 and you must have completed a Law Degree, or a non-Law Degree followed by the PGDL.

Herrington Carmichael is offering a Level 7 Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship for a graduate who wants to combine structured academic study with practical legal experience. You will work towards qualification as a Solicitor through BPP’s Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship. Alongside your work at the Firm, you will receive one protected study day each week for live online teaching and independent study. The programme incorporates preparation for the SQE assessments, while your work at Herrington Carmichael provides the Qualifying Work Experience required to qualify. You will earn a salary throughout the apprenticeship, and there is no requirement to enter into a study-cost repayment agreement.

The Opportunity

You will complete two to three rotations across different areas of the Firm. These may include Corporate, Property and Private Client practice areas, although placements will reflect the Firm’s business needs and the experience required to support your development. You will work alongside Solicitors, Senior Solicitors and Partners, gaining practical experience while gradually taking on greater responsibility. Your work may include:

  • Assisting with the day-to-day management of client matters
  • Carrying out legal research and preparing written summaries
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents
  • Communicating with clients and other professional advisers
  • Attending client meetings and supporting transaction or matter management
  • Maintaining accurate files, records and case-management information
  • Supporting business development and wider team activities
  • Completing the academic and work-based requirements of the apprenticeship
  • Acting in accordance with the Firm’s policies, professional standards and regulatory obligations

What We're Looking For

  • A genuine interest in developing a long-term legal career
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Sound judgement and attention to detail
  • An organised and reliable approach to work
  • The ability to manage competing commitments and meet deadlines
  • A willingness to ask questions, act on feedback and take responsibility for your development
  • An interest in working with colleagues and clients across different practice areas
  • An understanding of Herrington Carmichael and the clients we support

Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  • Be aged 21 or under on 1 January 2027, in line with the apprenticeship funding requirements applying to this vacancy
  • Have completed a Law Degree, or a non-Law Degree followed by the PGDL, before the apprenticeship begins in January 2027
  • Be able to meet BPP’s admission requirements and the applicable apprenticeship funding rules
  • Be eligible to undertake the Solicitor Apprenticeship and meet the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s requirements for admission as a Solicitor

Applicants who have already completed all of the SQE assessments will not normally be eligible for this apprenticeship route.

The Perks

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Support Staff Bonus
  • Free car parking
  • Comprehensive benefits package including pension, enhanced maternity and paternity pay, 25 days holiday plus Christmas closure, and Perkbox
  • Opportunities for learning and development within a supportive and dynamic team

Qualification and Future Opportunities

Successful completion of the apprenticeship, including the SQE assessments and all applicable SRA requirements, will enable you to apply for admission as a Solicitor. Qualification and any offer of continued employment with Herrington Carmichael will be subject to successful completion of the programme, satisfactory performance, the Firm’s requirements and the availability of a suitable role. We hope to retain and develop strong performers wherever there is an appropriate opportunity.

The Application Process

Applications must be submitted through the Firm’s online recruitment system by 30 September 2026. Our selection process is expected to include:

  • An online application
  • An initial interview on Microsoft Teams
  • An in-person Assessment Centre
  • A final interview

We will provide further information about each stage to candidates who progress. If you require reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, please tell us when submitting your application so that we can support you.
