Equans M&E Engineering (Building Services) Graduate Scheme Overview

The world around us is changing rapidly, placing an increased demand on the growing services sectors to become net zero. We are looking for the next generation of engineers, with a keen interest in sustainability, who will support our clients on this journey by continuing to innovate across different areas of our business and support the energy, digital and industrial sectors.

Starting in September 2026, you will join our induction with the other graduates in your cohort to start building your network and understanding of the business before your specific placement commences. During your scheme, you will experience operational and functional roles alongside our Engineering teams. Your time on the graduate scheme will span across a 2-year period, and you will complete between two to four rotations of either 6 or 12 months in length depending on the project type and department. You will need to be fully mobile as the placements could be based anywhere within the UK and graduates might need to relocate throughout the scheme depending on the placement locations.

As part of our Engineering teams, you could be a part of one of our largest facilities management contracts, where we work in partnership with some of the UK’s biggest hospitals, universities, and schools. Alternatively, you could be helping to mobilize one of our newest contract wins. A life in Engineering is never dull, and as an Equans graduate, you will gain experience in managing large complex engineering projects and diverse teams in a fun and rewarding industry.

Responsibilities

As a M&E Engineering (Building Services) Graduate, you will rotate across different areas, predominantly in our Sustainable FM division, to develop your technical, people & project management skills. The placements will either be within our central engineering and compliance function, or on our operational sites.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience and put your engineering credentials to the test in various customer sectors, which may include:

  • Corporate environments
  • Manufacturing and Industrial
  • Healthcare and Blue Light
  • Nuclear
  • Education

Some of the roles and responsibilities you may undertake during your rotations could be:

  • Supporting the central Engineering & Compliance team train, assess and appoint our engineers to carry out complex isolation activities
  • Interpreting net zero carbon roadmaps, developing and implementing solutions to reduce our clients’ emissions
  • Auditing our contracts for compliance with our contractual maintenance obligations and ensuring the adequate application of our engineering safe systems of work
  • Assisting our contracts in the planning of complex engineering activities, e.g. shutting down areas of our hospitals to carry out intrusive electrical testing and inspection
  • Following training given on the scheme, fulfilling the role of a Contract Responsible Person, for the management of our Water or Gas systems
  • Development and build of our Asset management & Planned Maintenance systems, when mobilizing a new contract
  • Supporting our contracts to realize their local and regional sustainability goals

Or working on specific projects for a cluster of operational contracts, for example:

  • Revalidating hospital operating theatre ventilation systems
  • Planning and overseeing the completion of High and Low Voltage breaker maintenance, carried out by a contractor
  • Planning and overseeing the statutory inspections of steam boilers
  • Project managing the transition from gas boilers to heat pumps, on our schools contracts

Training & Development

Over the graduate scheme, we will provide a wide variety of training opportunities to develop your engineering, leadership, and management skills, so that you can excel, and be ready for an Engineering Management role following the end of the scheme. You will gain exposure to different areas of the business and opportunities to increase your network, such as through working on a business improvement project with other graduates which you will present to senior leaders. You will be encouraged and supported to apply to become a member of a relevant engineering institution and assisted in navigating a route to professional registration, for example as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.

You will be supported to drive your development through structured placement reviews and regular meetings with the Early Careers team. From day one, you will have a buddy, usually a graduate in the year above, to share experiences with, and you will have a mentor throughout the scheme. You will also be able to join any of our employee-led networks, including our Young Professionals Network.

Impact

We are looking for the next generation of engineers, who will continue to innovate in our chosen markets, to transform our products and manage the services delivered to customers. As a graduate, you will work on the front line, gaining exposure to the people, processes, and technology that are transforming our business. The graduate scheme carries real responsibility – you will be doing work that is relevant and central to our business and have the opportunity to make a big impact early on in your career.

At the end of the scheme, you will have developed the skills and knowledge to go into a Technical or Engineering Management role. Many of our graduates continue to make a big impact in our Business, including our current CEO for our Digital & Energy Services Division.
