Consultant Pay From £105,100 + Benefits
Accredited GMP Pay From £100,400 + Benefits
Starting pay and seniority for all Medical Officers (Doctors) will be calculated individually based upon previous experience.
Accredited GMP pay starts from £100,400 if joining within one year of CCT, rising to £132,300 once one completed year post CCT is reached.
Depending on your specialisation and Service need, there may be potential to gain a substantial Golden Hello.
A doctor in the RAF is known internally as a Medical Officer and you will deliver a high standard of care, sometimes under challenging conditions. You will play a vital role in keeping our personnel fit and medically prepared for operational roles.
The RAF Medical Services are currently recruiting the following specialisations: General Practitioners, Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants, Psychiatrists, and Occupational Medicine Consultants.
There are also opportunities to become a Medical Officer through Medical Sponsorship (for those studying medicine at University) or as a Resident Doctor.
What Will You Do?
RAF Medical Officers play a vital role in keeping our personnel fit and medically prepared for their operational role, at home and when deployed. All RAF Medical Officers receive basic training in aviation medicine and have the opportunity to train further to provide specialist medical support to the RAF and the UK Armed Forces, including Aeromedical Evacuation. Typical responsibilities include:
- Medical duties in field hospitals
- General Practitioner duties in RAF medical centres
- Specialist activities in NHS medical units
Requirements & Eligibility
At a glance:
- Be fully registered with the General Medical Council.
- Sponsorship is available for the final three years of study in a UK Medical School.
- Be aged 19 - 53 (Must attest before 54th birthday).
- You will need to meet specific Nationality and Residency criteria.
- Commit to a Preliminary Commission of 6 years service.
- Meet the health and fitness criteria.
- Pass a Fitness test.
- Current Priority: General Practitioner.
Entry Requirements
- Minimum Age: When completed professional/education qualifications.
- Maximum Age: Candidates can be accepted up to age 54 if already fully accredited. Must have entered SOITC by 54th birthday.
- If professional training is required, the age limit is lowered accordingly. For Resident Doctors, the maximum age is 43 and entrants must enter SOITC by their 43rd birthday.
- Applicants must ensure they meet all entry requirements before applying.
Education Requirements
Direct entrants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council. Sponsorship is available for the final three years of study in a UK Medical School.
Nationality & Residency
Applicants must meet specific nationality and residency criteria.
Fitness Requirements
Applicants must meet health and fitness standards suitable for military duty.
Health Requirements
Applicants must pass an occupational health assessment to demonstrate fitness for military service.

- Phase One Training
Initial Officer Training - 12 weeks at RAF Cranwell. All Specialist Branch officers begin their RAF career on the Specialist Officer Initial Training Course (SOITC) at RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire. - Phase Two Training
Specialist training - ongoing as assigned. This course provides a breadth of skills and knowledge across the full range of duties. - General Duties Tour
Ongoing development - ongoing as assigned. New officers typically move jobs every 2 or 3 years, each known as a tour. - Career Prospects
Ongoing development - ongoing as assigned. The RAF offers a structured career path mirroring civilian medical careers. - Ongoing Development

- Specialist Interview - Online interview lasting about 1 hour to showcase skills and experience.
- Health Assessment - Occupational health assessment to ensure fitness for military duty.
- Fitness Test - Pre-Joining Fitness Test (2.4km run) at a local gym, with performance levels varying by age and gender.
- OASC - Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre visit assessing leadership, teamwork, communication, motivation, and problem solving, including an interview.
- Acceptance - Provisional offer of service interview to confirm understanding and commitment.
- Familiarisation Visit - Two-day visit providing insight into officer training, kit issue, lectures, and a repeat fitness test.
- Training - Modular Initial Officer Training Course (MIOTC) to prepare commissioning officers for their RAF career.
