About us:

As a successful candidate, you will work in the transnational Virtual Product Engineering team of the Central Research & Technology (R&T) organisation in the UK, based in the Airbus Aerospace Integrated Research and Test Centre in Filton, Bristol.

We are a team based on agile engineering principles and place a strong value on innovation. With a multinational makeup, team members will have opportunities to interact with colleagues in France and Germany. Our team focus is on the development of future capabilities to support Multidisciplinary Design and Optimisation through Modelling and Simulation.

Our placements give a unique insight into potential career paths within Airbus. They are designed so that you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain crucial industry experience. The skills and knowledge you gain will improve your chances of a future role within Airbus and should benefit your future studies.

What you will be doing:

  • Supporting the development of new approaches to enable the rapid exploration of design options for future aircraft products;
  • Utilising aerodynamics, structures, and systems simulation methods, the key disciplinary characteristics of an engineering problem can be described;
  • Fusing the data together to enable Multi Disciplinary Analysis and Optimisation to be realised that can identify the best engineering solution for a given objective;
  • You will investigate how techniques such as AI / Machine Learning, Agent-Based Modelling and, potentially, Quantum Computing can enable a rapid understanding and exploration of the aircraft design space. Such techniques offer opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of air transport;
  • At the end of the placement, you will support the demonstration of such approaches on an aircraft and air transport system related engineering problem.

Requirements:

  • Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore, it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.
  • Your application should include a CV along with a Cover Letter outlining your motivation and suitability for the role.

    • Studying towards a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent;
    • A passion for Aerospace and one or more of its related engineering disciplines;
    • Experience in computer programming and a willingness to learn and apply the Python programming language and its common packages to problems in engineering modelling and simulation, optimisation, and machine learning;
    • An ability to summarise findings in technical reports;
    • A good team player with excellent communication skills, and able to work independently;
    • Fluency in English.
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
