Placement Volunteers at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and enthusiasm they bring. We aim to provide our placement volunteers with an insight into the daily workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. They will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement with possible ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of activity. Our placement volunteers will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross and will be responsible for achieving specific agreed objectives within one of our various departments.
About the role: Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) Hub Assistant – Volunteer Opportunity
Are you passionate about humanitarian work and looking to make a difference? The British Red Cross is seeking a Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) Hub Assistant to support our International Directorate team. This volunteer role is perfect for someone eager to gain experience in auditing and re-categorising content, creating engaging resources like guides and videos, and maintaining multilingual materials, while contributing to a global cause. As a volunteer, you'll assist the Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) team in improving our online platform, which promotes a consistent approach to community engagement across the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Your key tasks may include:
- Supporting the auditing and re-categorisation of content on the CEA Hub platform.
- Supporting the creation of engaging content, such as guides, videos, and templates for the CEA Hub and Community of Practice (CoP) page.
- Helping maintain multilingual resources and preparing documents for translation.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams and sharing insights to improve the platform’s reach and effectiveness.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable skills in CEA, content management and creation, and teamwork while contributing to impactful humanitarian work. Alongside working with the CEA Learning and Content Manager on the CEA Hub, this placement will provide opportunities for a volunteer to see how the International Directorate of the BRC operates and the instrumental role CEA has within the humanitarian sector.
What you may be doing:
- Data Analysis: Utilise analytical tools to examine data on the Community Engagement Hub. Identify patterns, trends, and correlations within user engagement data.
- Identify Resource Gaps: Conduct an analysis of key CEA themes and geographic areas, to identify where resources may be lacking and give insight to planning of CEA content creation.
- Content Creation: Support with the creation of content including user guides, templates, videos, and web design.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepare comprehensive reports outlining key findings, trends, and recommendations and support on any ongoing learning reviews, such as a review on youth engagement approaches across the Movement.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including content creators, developers, thematic advisers, and the CEA team through participation at team meetings and share insights.
- Translation: Support with the maintenance of the multilingual sites including the preparation of documents for translators and the coordination of translation uploads.
We would like you to have good communication, be adaptable and willing to help the team with a range of tasks, be reliable, organised, and able to work independently and also have good IT skills.
Bursary Scheme
The British Red Cross offers a bursary scheme to those placement volunteers from low-income households. Eligibility will be determined through a separate application process open to all short-listed candidates. All British Red Cross volunteers are entitled to out-of-pocket reasonable expenses. For this scheme, we are defining low-income households as:
- Inside London: Living with family or partner £25,000 or under. Living independently £22,500 or under.
- Outside London: Living with family or partner £18,500 or under. Living independently £16,500 or under.

Our placement volunteer opportunities are open to people at different stages of their career, aged 15 or above. Whether you’re a student, a recent graduate or someone with more experience looking for a career change, we would be happy to hear from you. Anyone can volunteer with the Red Cross from the age of 15. An individual risk assessment, parental consent, and safeguarding considerations will be required for those aged 15 – 17. The nature of the activities specific to your opportunity may mean that you need to be 18 years or older.
