Seriously smart but not sure what to do with it?

Are you looking for a company where you can be yourself, never get bored, and are surrounded by bright and interesting people?

CGP has built a remarkable business over the last 30 years and it’s all down to the people we employ.

Right now, we’re looking for a few exceptionally clever people who feel corporate city jobs aren’t for them, academia is too dull, or teaching is just not their thing. We’re talking about people in the top 1% of their year (and maybe with a PhD).

We’ve got high expectations, so we’ll throw you in at the deep end with some senior-level priority projects from day one. We’re after incredibly smart people with at least a few years’ work experience, who are interested (and interesting), thrive on learning new things and are determined to give anything a go.

CGP’s not your average publishing company…

  • We have a great working environment in the beautiful Lake District
  • We obsess over finding the right people and then challenging (and rewarding) them
  • And for this role, we’re searching for exceptionally bright people to deal with the trickier (but definitely more interesting) stuff…

If you could deliver things like our pub and brewery refurbishment plans, margin improvement projects and candlestick making (we’re not kidding), then this could be the place for you.

What you will do

CGP has all the departments you’d expect for a publisher like Editing, Marketing, People Team and IT, but we also manage a huge estate including three farms, numerous pubs, a butcher, a baker and yes, even a candlestick-maker!

As a Business Partner at CGP, you’ll work for a member of the Senior Team on a variety of strategically important projects from across our business:

  • It could be anything from planning our books pricing strategy, to negotiating with our pension provider, or delivering our £1m pub and brewery refurbishment plan
  • You’ll carry out research to become the company expert in areas totally new to our business
  • Your projects could involve presenting new ideas to the Board or the whole business, as well as working with people outside CGP
  • You’ll be expected to analyse and report on data or project aims, to make sure we’re achieving our targets
  • You’ll independently manage your own time and workload but with support if needed

What you will get

As well as joining a really supportive, growing business based in the stunning Lake District National Park, you’ll also receive:

  • £35k-£55k (depending on your experience and qualifications)
  • Minimum 25 days holiday a year (plus bank holidays)
  • Generous health care benefits and a company pension scheme
  • Leisure and golf club membership – yes, we’ve got a swimming pool and sauna on site!
  • Discounts in our butchers, grocers and bakers (and on our books!)
  • Great career and salary progression opportunities

What you will need

We’re looking for exceptionally smart graduates with a decent amount of work experience who are ready for a new challenge.

You’ll have:

  • An incredible academic record – excellent A-levels, First Class degree or top of your year 2:1
  • Ideally post-graduate experience in a professional environment – this could be a mixture of work and further study, like a PhD
  • An enthusiasm for researching new topics and the ability to pass this knowledge on to others
  • An exceptional eye for detail and be comfortable with data (you don’t need to be an Excel expert though)
  • The initiative to independently drive and deliver projects, while working closely with others from CGP and elsewhere
  • A really positive and flexible attitude – you’ll respond well to feedback and shifting priorities

Where you will be

At CGP we work hard to build an enjoyable working environment for all our staff.
Joining us means you’ll be:

  • Working for a hugely successful, growing company with a turnover of over £40m/year
  • Based at one of our attractive offices in the beautiful Lake District National Park
  • Part of a team that’s committed to supporting and investing in our local community
  • Enjoying all the benefits of our unique company environment – free beans, fantastic parties, Quirk Ambassador… just watch our Great Place to Work video to find out more!
