Internship Overview

This full-time summer internship is designed for PhD students in the penultimate or final year of an accredited programme in the EMEA region. The placement lasts approximately 13 to 17 weeks, begins in May, June or July 2027, and requires the successful candidate to be based in the United Kingdom for the programme. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

About the Role

Interns may be placed in Software Engineering or Site Reliability Engineering. Software Engineering interns design, test, deploy and maintain software solutions for projects that are important to Google. Site Reliability Engineering interns work on the code, automation and operational systems that keep large-scale services reliable, secure and performant.

The work can include production troubleshooting, monitoring, alerting, automation infrastructure and technical projects using areas such as natural language processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data compression and search technology.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design and develop software applications that extend or improve Google products.
  • Contribute to technical projects involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, data compression or search technologies.
  • Collaborate on scalability challenges involving access to large volumes of data and information.
  • Apply software troubleshooting skills in large-scale production environments.
  • Support the reliability and maintenance of mission-critical services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field in the EMEA region and in the penultimate or final year of study.
  • Experience using data structures and algorithms through coursework, projects, research, internships, employment or open-source development.
  • Experience with at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Java, C, C++, Python, JavaScript or Go.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical programming experience using C++, Java, Python or Go through research, teaching, internships or personal projects.
  • Research experience in areas such as algorithms, computer architecture, artificial intelligence, compilers, databases, data mining, distributed systems, machine learning, networking or systems.
  • Experience with web or mobile development, Unix or Linux, distributed systems, information retrieval, natural language processing, networking, security or large software systems.
  • Availability to complete a full-time 13 to 17 week internship in the United Kingdom beginning in May, June or July 2027.
