Work experience
The Soulful Internship is a year of care, connection, and personal development. Interns live in a house-share alongside people with and without learning disabilities, offering 32 hours of support a week to help their housemates with everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, going on day trips, and using the toilet. You would then spend 8 hours a week on a personal development course, developing your skills of reflective practice, self-regulation, conflict resolution, and mindfulness. Interns also attend three retreats over the year.
This is more than a job: you will learn how to care for people with learning disabilities, while also getting the chance to deepen your knowledge of yourself and others. As one intern put it: ‘I can see how much I’m growing in the Soulful Internship. I never would have had this experience with people with learning disabilities without this. This isn't just a job, it will change your life.' The Soulful Internship is for perfect for someone who is craving more meaning and community in their day-to-day life. We welcome people of all faith backgrounds and none, including those who are spiritual but not religious.
L’Arche is an international movement of people with and without learning disabilities sharing life together. Last year, we celebrated our fifty-year jubilee of L'Arche in the UK – fifty years of transforming lives through community living.
No previous experience of care or people with learning disabilities is necessary, only an openness to difference and a willingness to learn. Room and board included, plus a stipend of at least £354 a month. We are hosting interns in our communities in Canterbury, London, Bognor Regis, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Inverness. The internship runs from mid-September 2025 until August 2026 (exact start dates are adaptable).
