Job Description
West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is the regional authority for the urban West Midlands, aiming to improve life in the region. We are currently recruiting for two paid, eight-week internship cohorts in 2026: the Spring Cohort (April to May) and the Summer Cohort (July to August). Successful interns will be based at our offices at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham, with at least three days per week in person. Start dates will be confirmed upon completion of pre-employment checks. You must be available for the full duration of your chosen cohort.
What You Will Be Doing
You will contribute to impactful projects. Depending on your team, tasks may include:
- Researching key policy issues affecting the region
- Helping communicate with communities and decision-makers
- Drafting responses to consultations
- Supporting events and engagement activities
- Contributing to the delivery of projects and programmes
- Collaboratively turning ideas into action
No two days will be the same, and support will be provided throughout your time with us.

What We Are Looking For
We seek thoughtful, curious individuals who want to make a difference. You do not need prior experience in regional government. We value your thinking, motivation, and willingness to learn.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Creativity in presenting ideas clearly
- Motivation and a positive attitude
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A GCSE-level education or equivalent
- A genuine interest in the West Midlands
We particularly welcome applications from groups underrepresented in our sector, including women, ethnic minorities, and care leavers.

- Learning and impact: Explain what you hope to gain from this internship and how your work could make a difference.
You will also indicate your availability for the internship cohorts.
Introductory Webinars
We will host an introductory webinar before the application deadline, where you can learn more about the application process and ask questions.

What Happens Next?
