We are currently seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our educational research team as a statistician, to support a range of research and evaluation projects.

AlphaPlus is an education service business specialising in standards, assessment and certification. We help our clients design, develop, deploy and evaluate qualifications and their underpinning assessments. AlphaPlus is a wholly owned subsidiary of AQA Education.

The statistician will be a specialist in the technical area of statistics or quantitative research, psychometrics or data science, who will work within the research team to provide high quality statistical outputs contributing to AlphaPlus educational research and consultancy services.

Candidates must have:

  • Statistics knowledge at Master’s degree level or a BSc and relevant experience
  • Experience in coding statistical analyses (in R, SAS, SPSS or similar software). Please note ability to code in R, though helpful, is not essential for consideration for the role; appointees without coding skills in R will be expected to learn to code in R on taking up the post
  • The ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers.

Some project management skills and knowledge of classical test theory, item response theory, DIF analysis, and regression analysis techniques are desirable, as is working experience as a statistician/junior analyst at a research body (ideally in education).

Benefits include:

  • discretionary profit related bonus scheme
  • NEST workplace pension scheme – tier 1
  • enhanced sick pay cover
  • enhanced maternity/parental leave
  • 25 days paid leave plus the eight statutory bank holidays
  • commitment to developing the expertise of our employees.

For an informal discussion about the vacancy please email Matt Turner, Senior Data Science Officer, Matthew Turner, who will contact you to arrange a suitable time for a call.

The position is permanent, full-time working 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday and is Manchester office based. Part-time/job share/other adaptable working arrangements may be considered for the right candidate. Any such preferences are to be discussed further at interview. The company offers hybrid working (two days a week minimum in the office, with three days working at home). The exact allocation of office-based days is decided by the appointee’s manager, although flexibility remains our policy and approach.

The role will also involve national and occasional international travel, potentially including working in customer offices.

Please note that sponsorship under the UK government’s skilled worker sponsorship scheme is not available due to the salary not meeting the threshold.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to undertake a coding test and to an interview subject to satisfactory completion of the test, both taking place in the week commencing 13 January 2025.
