Description
We’re looking for a talented university student to join us as an Urban Design Intern this summer. We expect the successful applicant will join us for around 2-3 months, but we can offer anything from one month to six-month placements depending on the individual and the experience sought after.
Experience Provided
This role offers students an opportunity to immerse themselves in office life and to understand what it is to be an Urban Designer. You will gain new skills and experience, working across various scales, ranging from strategic masterplans to building design. There will be the chance to develop CAD skills and prepare drawings from sketch schemes to detailed planning applications. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to join in with internal team meetings and group discussions, training seminars, as well as visit sites to see some of our built projects and current project locations.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Technical and Design
- Awareness of masterplanning procedures.
- Working knowledge of traditional architecture and contextual urban design would be advantageous.
- Good hand drawing skills would be advantageous.
- To assist in the preparation of sketch, working and presentation models as required.
- To assist in the preparation of CAD drawings for internal and external purposes.
- Take instructions to carry out refinements/revisions to the design to satisfy the brief, the site-context and any additional client requirements that may come to light, as the project progresses.
- Attend sites to assist with detail area surveys or, other site related issues/meetings as required.
- Assist in preparation and/or commission measured surveys and site reports.
Communication
- Excellent presentation skills, both verbal and drawing.
- Attending internal and external meetings.
General
- Good communication skills and personal presentation.
- Common-sense and a practical approach to problems.
- Ability to write good, clear English.
- Interest in traditional architecture and contextual urban design, though previous knowledge not essential.
- Willingness to expand knowledge and experience.
- Willingness to learn and adopt new skills, sharing in general office duties and administration.
- Willingness to travel within the UK.
Computer/Technical Skills
- Experience with MSOffice (Word/Excel)
- Awareness of CAD systems (ArchiCAD training will be provided)
- Drawing and presentation skills
Qualifications
Working towards a degree or master’s qualification in urban design, planning or architecture.
