Recruitment process

First Steps Programme: First Steps is a one-week programme designed specifically for students that have just started university and are considering a career in law. If you are interested in a career in law and want to know what life is really like at a future facing global law firm, researching online is one thing. However, trying it for yourself is completely different – and that’s the purpose of First Steps.

Whatever your background, the programme’s blend of practical work experience, skills sessions, trainee shadowing, and networking will build your knowledge and your contacts in equal measure. You will be invited to social events, lunches, and coffee networking where you’ll get to meet representatives from across the firm. Successfully complete the week-long programme and you will be fast-tracked to an assessment day for our CMS Academy (vacation scheme).

CMS Academy Programme: The main route to securing a training contract with us is through our award-winning CMS Academy programme. This is your chance to take part in a programme that represents one of the largest investments any law firm makes in nurturing its next generation of talent. Learn the business of law. Meet clients. Work on live projects. Network with lawyers. Debate the future alongside thought leaders. All of this on a summer vacation scheme that results in, on average, 90% of participants receiving a training contract offer from us. Your journey starts with an Open Day, where you’ll meet fellow participants and find out how best to prepare for the CMS Academy programme taking place in the summer. Your first week focuses on learning the business of law. You will experience a series of engaging and collaborative activities designed to enhance your development and prepare you for a career in law. These include: Client dialogue, Networking with lawyers at all levels and Wellbeing sessions. This is followed by a two-week internship in the CMS office you applied for. You will be assigned a supervisor, trainee buddy, and be exposed to practical work that provides real insight into life as a trainee with us.

Business Development & Marketing Graduate Programme: Discover all about the business of law. See how marketing and branding drive our firm’s success, and help our clients achieve their goals. This graduate recruitment programme is designed to expose ambitious new graduates to the creative, competitive and fast-moving worlds of business development and marketing. You’ll be part of a team that’s driving how we position our brand on the global stage. All while helping clients meet targets and supporting the firm to win new business. You’ll learn from some of the best business development teams in the sector – creating impactful marketing campaigns and learning how strategic clients and tenders are managed. You can also expect to build an understanding of how digital and brand work together to deliver effective communications that raise the profile and drive the success of CMS.

Culture and values

For us, the future of law isn’t just about what we can do for our clients. It also about what we can do for our people. We’re committed to providing a supportive, inclusive, socially responsible and flexible environment in which every member of our team can thrive.

Across all our core areas of expertise, our lawyers show the openness, boldness, agility, and dynamism required to deliver future facing advice and insight.

We like to get fully involved in the worlds our clients work in, rather than just watch from the sidelines. It’s an approach that enables us to truly place their interests and priorities at the heart of everything we do.

Diversity statement

CMS place diversity and inclusion at the centre of our culture and at the heart of our business as it makes our firm a more rewarding place to work and a more sustainable business.

Future Facing Inclusion is our approach to building a culture of trust, respect and inclusion which embraces differences and encourages diversity of people, views and experiences, for the benefit of all.’ - Penelope Warne, The Senior Partner

As a global, future-facing law firm diversity and inclusion are not just aspirations for us, they are an imperative. We are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive culture that encourages authenticity and celebrates all our people and their unique backgrounds.

We are proud of the progress we have already made but diversity and inclusion is always going to be a journey and there will always be scope to get better.

That is why we don’t just do this alone. We collaborate with our stakeholders – clients, community organisations, charities, schools, suppliers and other businesses – as it enables us to have an even greater impact.
