Meet the Quant Team, Casper
Education: MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing and DPhil in Mathematics (Oxford)
Part of the appeal of working at Marshall Wace for me is the wide scope of projects available to us right from the start, from exploring novel datasets and signal construction methods to portfolio construction and implementing realistic trading logic. This has enabled me to understand how financial markets operate at scale and what it takes to trade fully systematically, all the way from idea generation to actual trades.
Compared to my time in academia, the work we do here is guaranteed to be highly relevant and often has a direct impact on our live codebase and trading systems, providing a quick feedback loop via the markets. Being able to do this work in a collaborative environment with smart colleagues is the icing on the cake.

Being on the Quant Implementation team gives me exposure to a wide variety of interesting and intellectually challenging subject areas. I work on projects covering different asset classes ranging from perfecting our backtests to be a closer representation of live, to bettering our portfolio construction & improving how we execute trades. It is exciting to see how my work can positively impact the firm.
As a junior member of the team, I receive a lot of support. Everyone on my team is willing to make time to explain unfamiliar concepts to me. Members of the quant teams are also modest and receptive to new ideas. I feel comfortable coming up with new proposals and challenging the existing implementation.

As a Quantitative Researcher, I am responsible for the entire process of creating alphas, from exploring real-world datasets to creating forecasts and monitoring them in production. This requires creativity and collaboration with my incredibly talented peers. The projects we tackle are both challenging and important, and the path forward is rarely clear-cut.
Work-life balance here is important. In addition to my work, I lead a fulfilling life as a new father. Marshall Wace offers a six-week paternity leave which has allowed me to spend precious time with my family.
Meet the Fund Accounting Team, Simran
Education: BSc Economics (Nottingham University)
I joined MW as a graduate in 2020 and currently work in the Reconciliations team. My primary responsibilities include performing T+1 reconciliations across all asset classes to ensure MW’s records are accurate for valuations, trading, counterparty management, and overseeing our data feeds from brokers. The wide variety of products and prime brokers we work with daily ensures that the job is always varied and challenging.
MW has a collaborative environment that supports different ideas and enables a broad range of project work regardless of experience. This ensures that code or process changes are implemented quickly and efficiently, supporting our culture of automation and continuous improvement. Receiving support to implement significant changes early in my career has been very rewarding.
Meet the Fund Accounting Team, Naoufel
Education: Bsc Accounting & Finance (University of Bath)
In 2022 I joined the graduate scheme at Marshall Wace as part of the Fund Accounting team. The sub team I am a part of plays a crucial role in calculating and delivering the net asset value (NAV) of our funds accurately and promptly. This information is vital for both internal stakeholders and external investors to monitor the performance of our funds. Given the dynamic nature of Marshall Wace we are constantly integrating new products and workflows into our systems and balance sheets. We are also continuously innovating our control processes which keeps my role both stimulating and engaging.
Within just a few days of starting I was entrusted with tasks and projects that had a significant impact on our operations. The responsibility placed upon me, as well as the opportunity to work alongside highly skilled colleagues, has greatly accelerated my learning and continuously expanded my knowledge.
Meet the Tech Team, Elizabeth
Education: MMathPhys Mathematical and Theoretical Physics (University of Oxford)
As a technology graduate, I am rotating through different teams within the business. In the three rotations I have been through so far, I have experienced not only the varying tech stacks but also how the different teams fit together. It has been a great opportunity to discover my particular interests and what type of work best fits me.
I joined Marshall Wace through the summer internship program where I had the opportunity to contribute to an impactful project from day one. This is a great part about working here: graduates are given responsibility and ownership from the start. It is rewarding to work in an environment which places so much value on challenging and supporting your development.
Meet the Tech Team, Will
Education: MPhil Advanced Computer Science (Cambridge University), BSc Computer Science (Sheffield University)
I started on the Graduate scheme in 2017, where after a couple of rotations I joined the Data Engineering team permanently. As a team we are responsible for providing external data to the rest of the firm, empowering researchers and analysts to access and discover data with the trust that it is modelled and monitored to a high quality. From when I joined, the team has grown from a handful of people in London comprised mainly of Graduates, to almost 30 across London, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong. My responsibility has grown too – I now run 2 of the teams within Data Engineering, along with running the Global Technology Internship, and leading our efforts for Technology Graduate recruitment.
My role at Marshall Wace has allowed me to work on new and diverse technical challenges every day in a hugely collaborative environment. I have also been provided the opportunity to play a huge part in how the team has grown over the years, right from the beginning of my career.
Meet the Tech Team, Vincent
Education: MSc Machine Learning (UCL), BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering (UCL)
As a grad at Marshall Wace, I’ve received invaluable experience in many different roles throughout my rotations. I’ve learnt what it’s like to be a Data Engineer, an Infrastructure Engineer, a Business Analytics Engineer and finally a Full Stack Software Engineer handling Post Trade operations which is the team I’ve chosen to place in full time. Each team taught me how to use different technologies as well as different ways of approaching problems, which I could then contribute towards the future teams I rotated through. It’s great that grads are treated as full time members and given responsibilities that perfectly achieve the balance of driving them forward and giving them space to reflect and learn.
What makes working at Marshall Wace so great is very much the combination of amazing culture, talent, and interesting problems. The flat and open culture means that you can reach out to anybody you need to achieve your task, and the high level of talent means that you can trust that they will help you out effectively. As a graduate software engineer, you get exposed to very exciting challenges of handling data at scale as well as navigating the complexities of the financial system and creating good abstractions for them in your projects.
