Culture & Values
We operate responsibly every day to enable a safe, sustainable and healthy future for people and communities everywhere.
It all comes back to inventing for life
No matter our role or title, we all rise to the challenge in pursuit of better health outcomes.
Everything we do, in and out of the laboratory, is based on our deep appreciation for life. That’s the reason we come together across the business with one purpose – to use the power of leading-edge science to save and improve lives around the world.
Our values
Our values represent the very core of our character. They guide every decision and action we take.
Patients first
We are all accountable for delivering high quality products and services. We aspire to improve the health and wellness of people and animals worldwide and to expand access to our medicines and vaccines. All of our actions must be measured against our responsibility to those who use or need our products.
Diversity & Inclusion
With a substantial workforce in the UK, our ability to excel depends on the diversity, integrity, and imagination of our employees.
Our workforce represents the people we serve
As an employer of 1500 people in the UK, we believe that our employees are our greatest asset and are fundamental to everything we do. That’s why we are committed to developing a workforce that is diverse and talented, fostering a culture of mutual respect so that everyone can excel.
But diversity is only half of the story; inclusion is just as important. Inclusion means a sense of belonging. When our employees know they are crucial to our purpose, not only will they thrive, but our company will too.
Our workforce is multigenerational with employees ranging in age from 18-70. We truly represent the diverse population that we serve and are proud to have employees who have been with us for 10, 20 and even more than 30 years.
We're committed to diversity and inclusion, with 45 per cent of senior roles across the UK at present filled by women and half of our UK Human Health senior leadership team are women.
We’re dedicated to creating a working environment of mutual respect, inclusion and accountability. In line with reporting requirements, we welcome the opportunity to publish our gender pay gap reports.
Our global diversity & inclusion by the numbers...
- 51% - new hires globally were female in 2018
- 17K - EBRG members across our global company
- 15K - diverse suppliers globally
Fostering an inclusive environment that embraces different perspectives and values the contributions of everyone really is paramount to us. Having a globally and locally diverse workforce makes us a more innovative and agile company — and one better attuned to the needs of our customers, health care providers and patients who ultimately use our products.
We help our people become the very best in their fields and invest in their professional development whilst also encouraging a healthy work/life balance.
That’s why we have a range of programmes in place to support physical and mental wellbeing, including our ‘Live It’ programme providing support and resources for employees as well as over 25 trained Mental Health First Aiders.
Our people are passionate about making a difference – and our success is built upon their motivation and their passion to save and improve lives.
Our People
Our people are our greatest asset
Our people embrace the spirit of invention and are united behind our purpose to save and improve the lives of people and animals, whether creating medicines to address the world's most urgent health challenges, advancing animal health, or developing healthcare solutions that make a real difference to lives across the globe.
At MSD in the UK we invent for a more hopeful tomorrow
Together with our patients, partnerships and people we use our breadth of talent and skills to develop long-term solutions that change patients’ lives. Because for us, we’re inventing for life and that’s what gets us out of bed in the morning.
We aspire to make a difference, but we know we can’t do it alone
That’s why we focus on inventing together as employees and through our partnerships.
Responsibility
Supporting society, people and communities around the world is fundamental to our long-term success.
We run to, not from, the world’s biggest health challenges
From finding solutions for some of the world’s most debilitating diseases, to getting our medicines and vaccines to those in need and building more effective health systems, we are always on a mission to create a better world.
As we work toward a greener future, it is vital that we consider the impact of our operations and strive to operate our business sustainably to support the health of our planet and its people. Our work to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, achieve carbon neutrality, and ensure our science advances health care by reaching those most in need, represent our commitments to delivering greater value to society.
MSD For Mothers
Focused on improving the health and wellbeing of mothers during pregnancy and childbirth, MSD for Mothers is a global initiative helping to create a world where no woman has to die while giving life. In the UK, our ‘Mumma Kits’ containing essentials for neonatal care are donated annually to a UK charity and distributed to mothers and babies.
Globally, MSD for Mothers is a $650 million initiative. This effort has so far provided more than twenty million women with improved access to affordable, quality care.
40 hours of paid volunteering
We encourage employees to make an impact outside of their daily role with our 40 hour paid volunteering policy, where they can volunteer time towards supporting charities and not-for-profit organisations that matter to them.
Empowering colleagues to make a difference in their own community, our involvement includes projects such as school education programmes, beach cleans, and mountain rescues.
Better, more equitable health – beyond just science
MSD’s work is more than just scientific. We recognise that we have an important part to play in tackling health disparities to drive improvements in healthcare access and outcomes for patients across the UK.
We are actively collaborating across all levels of the healthcare system to achieve better patient outcomes and address these disparities
Diversity in clinical trials
We are pursuing new ways to recruit and engage clinical trial participants who are racially, socioeconomically, and demographically representative of the communities we aim to serve. It is vital that we have diverse representation in our research efforts so that our treatments’ efficacy is reflective of real-world populations.
