The targetjobs Student Committees present: The Insight Room – Your Weekly Space to Build Commercial Awareness

Every Wednesday from 4pm to 5pm, the targetjobs Student Committees host a student-led Insight Room, designed to help university students and early-career professionals develop commercial and industry awareness in a practical, accessible way.

We've got the STEM-Takeover from the 15th April for 12 weeks. 

Our sessions break down current events, market trends, and key business concepts in a simple, conversational, and actionable format, giving you the tools to stand out in applications, interviews, and assessment centres.

Whether you’re applying for training contracts, business school, internships, or corporate graduate roles, the Insight Room helps you understand how companies operate, make decisions, and respond to market changes — knowledge that employers value across all sectors.

See the themes weekly below:

Week 1 – Navigating STEM: Finding Your Path Aimed particularly at sixth form students still exploring their options. Covers the different disciplines within STEM, apprenticeship vs. university, how to choose the right course and institution, what to expect from lectures vs. practical work, and whether a placement year is worth it.

Week 2 – What Can You Do With Your Degree? Exploring career pathways with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate. Discusses whether a degree is strictly necessary for your target role and the non-traditional routes into STEM careers.

Week 3 – CV & Career Kick-Off Special Effective CV framing strategies for STEM roles, ATS-friendly formatting, useful tools and platforms, and live or pre-submitted CV reviews from the panel.

Week 4 – Acing Assessments & Interviews Preparing for behavioural rounds — the differentiator for graduate roles. Practising competency-based questions and understanding what interviewers are really looking for.

Week 5 – Day in the Life of a Woman in STEM A guest speaker walks through a typical working day — meetings, project work, lab time, site visits — giving attendees a grounded sense of what a STEM career actually looks and feels like in practice.

Week 6 – Research, Funding & Beyond Academia The importance of research in science, navigating the current funding landscape, and how to approach grant applications. Also covers entry-level roles in STEM (e.g. QA/QC Technician) and career paths beyond academia — industry, policy, entrepreneurship, and more.

Week 7 – The Power of Hobby Projects How building projects accelerates learning beyond tutorial hell. Shifting mindset from projects for the sake of it to building to solve a real problem. Covers key tools and frameworks, how side projects shape career trajectories, and examples of hobby projects that became businesses (e.g. the story of Twitter).

Week 8 – AI & Your Career: Navigating the New Landscape Why AI literacy matters for every STEM professional, practical ways to leverage AI tools in your studies and work, and how to future-proof your skill set in an AI-augmented industry.

Week 9 – Attendee-Led Session A session led by the community, for the community. Topics and format are shaped by attendees to foster ownership and peer learning.

Week 10 – Open Agenda — You Decide Attendees vote on the topic in the preceding weeks. A flexible session to address the most pressing questions raised during the programme so far.

Week 11 (Optional) – Cracking the Technical Interview Preparing for LeetCode-style challenges, system design fundamentals, and pre-interview tasks. Hear from an experienced interviewer on common pitfalls, and from a candidate on preparation strategies and lessons learned.

Week 12 – Exclusive Finale (want to make it invite only? - those who have attended at least 4 or more insight rooms) A high-profile closing session featuring prominent guest speakers and influencers in STEM. Covers experience sharing, gaining essential skills and
